Polish-American Politics in Chicago, 1880-1940
Author: Edward R. Kantowicz
Publisher: University of Chicago Press
ISBN: 9780226423807
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 284
Book Description
The "new immigrants" who came from southern and eastern Europe at the turn of the century have rarely been the subject of detailed scholarly examination. In particular, Poles and other Slavic groups have usually been written about in a filiopietist manner. Edward Kantowicz fills this gap with his incisive work on Poles in Chicago. Kantowicz examines such questions as why Chicago, with the largest Polish population of any city outside of Poland, has never elected a Polish mayor. The author also examines the origins of the heavily Democratic allegiance of Polish voters. Kantowicz demonstrates that Chicago Poles were voting Democratic long before Al Smith, Franklin Roosevelt, or the New Deal. Kantowicz has made extensive use of registration lists and voting records to construct a statistical picture of Polish-American voting behavior in Chicago. He draws on church records and census records to provide a detailed description of Chicago's many Polish neighborhoods. He also has studied the city's Polish-language press as well as the few manuscript collections left by Polish-American politicians. These collections, together with data gleaned from interviews with individuals who were acquainted with these figures, are used to sketch profiles of the political leaders of Polonia's capital. Kantowicz focuses on the goals which the Polish-American community pursued in politics, the issues they deemed important, and the functions which politics served for them. He links this analysis to observations on the homeland and the reasons for which the Poles emigrated. In this context he is able to draw conclusions about the nature of the ethnic politics in general. His work will appeal to a variety of readers: urban and twentieth-century historians, political scientists, and sociologists.

In Search Of A Lost People; The Old And The New Poland
Author: Joseph Tenenbaum
Publisher: Pickle Partners Publishing
ISBN: 1786257955
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 518
Book Description
The heart-breaking story of Joseph Tenenbaum who visited Poland in 1945 after the end of the Second World War in search of his Jewish relatives. “I can only report fragments of what I saw and heard or read during my two and a half months abroad. But these fragments seem to me to be not only of moment to Jews. Despite all the investigating commissions and international committees on behalf of Jewry, the world knows little enough of the depths of human degradation or the great surges of spirit and individual flashes of heroic greatness that have been revealed. There is a clash of two worlds, a clash that has not ceased with the death of Hitler in the gasoline flames in the cellars of the German chancellery. The sparks from the body-burning stakes at the Janowska camp in Lwow, of the ovens at Majdanek, Treblinka and Belzec, and the flames of the chimneys at Birkenau, Sobibor, Oranienburg and Mauthausen, have seared the human soul and scarred the human conscience. We cannot avoid facing the truth simply by ignoring it or driving it underground. The sanity of man, his very soul, requires a thorough catharsis which can come only through frank discussion, through revealing the naked evil in all its deformity and horror. We must think through all the implications, past and present, and realize their full dimensions. Only thus can sanity and moral strength be preserved for future generations. In short, while this book aims at giving a frank presentation of facts and conditions, it is hoped that it may offer a modest educational contribution towards a better world.”—From the Author’s Introduction

Bomber Harris: His Life and Times
Author: Henry Probert
Publisher: Pen and Sword
ISBN: 1848329679
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 631
Book Description
This is the definitive biography of one of the most controversial figures of the Second World War. Sir Arthur Harris remains the target of criticism and vilification by many, while others believe that the contribution he and his men made to the Allied victory is grossly undervalued. Harris has been condemned, in particular, for his Area Bombing tactics which saw civilians and their homes become legitimate targets along with industrial and military installations. This is explored by the author and placed fully within its context, and just as importantly, within the instructions he received from Churchill’s administration. Henry Probert’s critical but highly sympathetic account draws on wide-ranging research and, for the first time, all of Harris’ own papers, to give an outstanding insight into a man who combined leadership, professionalism and decisiveness with kindness, humour and generosity.

Category : History

Book Description
“Alphabet of Solidarity” is primarily addressed to young readers who do not remember those events and usually know little about the history of Solidarity We want to explain to them why we – witnesses of that time – insist that this history is still alive, that it is so very important not only for us, but also for young Poles Because, surely, the history of Solidarity is fascinating and inspiring today too It contains a positive narrative about Poland and Poles Each generation gradually grows to respect its ancestors Because, without knowing who preceded us in the generational relay, we cannot understand ourselves Even if, as is the right of youth, we are ridiculing tradition, demonstrating that it means nothing to us – there comes a time when we find ourselves lacking this knowledge And we need it like we need oxygen The history of Solidarity not only inspires, but also enables us to respect our ancestors and our nation It lets us believe in the sense of fighting for an independent state, in the sense of patriotism, civil courage, altruism, love of our fellow man and the clearly understood pluralism and tolerance Such heritage is included in the tradition of Solidarity In order to talk about this, we selected a form that is easier to take in than a scientific book, with hope that it will also be read by those who usually stay away from scientific works Hence, the idea of the “Alphabet of Solidarity” format with short encyclopaedic entries The book contains an alphabetical collection of names, concepts, slogans, and surnames, which constitute a specific, synthetic guide through the history of the Solidarity Carnival of 1980–1981 The texts are not scientific Rather, they are testimonies of the authors, who, usually as an op-ed, describe the phenomena of the freedom revolution employing a variety of styles and conventions The authors who accepted our invitation to participate in this project are a varied and pluralistic group, just like Solidarity However, what they all have in common is the belief that we are all both debtors and heirs of Solidarity, and that it is a story worth telling The purpose of the “Alphabet of Solidarity” is to showcase the brighter side of our history, which still inspires people with the positive energy of that time, because… “There is no freedom without Solidarity” Krzysztof Nowak

Curating (Post-)Socialist Environments
Author: Philipp Schorch
Publisher: transcript Verlag
ISBN: 3839455901
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 345
Book Description
In which ways are environments (post-)socialist and how do they come about? How is the relationship between the built environment, memory, and debates on identity enacted? What are the spatial, material, visual, and aesthetic dimensions of these (post-)socialist enactments or interventions? And how do such (post-)socialist interventions in environments become (re)curated? By addressing these questions, this volume releases ›curation‹ from its usual museological framing and carries it into urban environments and private life-worlds, from predominantly state-sponsored institutional settings with often normative orientations into spheres of subjectification, social creativity, and material commemorative culture.
