Jamantha Agape Williams Watson is an Assistant Professor of Performance in the Department of Fine and Performing Arts at Hampton University. Her focus area is in Acting. Professor Watson coaches Hampton Universitys award-winning Forensics and Debate Team. As a community servant, Watson is a tireless worker for Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She is also the founder of the AGAPE (Americans Giving to African People Everywhere) Connection, a non-profit organization that develops the socialization, education and residential needs of Africans throughout the world. For the past twenty years she has volunteered as an oral communication specialist in the female correctional facilities throughout Virginia. Currently she volunteers her oral communication services to women who are incarcerated in Newport News, Virginia. She has appeared in numerous theatrical, film and television productions and tours the one woman show LD, a performance exploring the overrepresentation of African American students in Special Education. Watson is the author of Moonlight on a Weathered Path: Selected Readings for Dramatic Interpretation, Soul Food: Daily Inspirational Nutrition, Classical and Modern Monologues for Women, Classical and Modern Monologues for Men, Hear Me Out: Monologues for Todays Generation and Dont Call Us Well Call You. Applying linguistic theory to the study of Homeric style, Egbert J. Bakker offers a highly innovative approach to oral poetry, particularly the poetry of Homer. By situating formulas and other features of oral style within the wider contexts of spoken language and communication, he moves the study of oral poetry beyond the landmark work of Milman Parry and Albert Lord. One of the book's central features, related to the research of the linguist Wallace Chafe, is Bakker's conception of spoken discourse as a sequence of short speech units reflecting the flow of speech through the consciousness of the speaker. Bakker shows that such short speech units are present in Homeric poetry, with significant consequences for Homeric metrics and poetics. Considering Homeric discourse as a speech process rather than as the finished product associated with written discourse, Bakker's book offers a new perspective on Homer as well as on other archaic Greek texts. Here Homeric discourse appears as speech in its own right, and is freed, Bakker suggests, from the bias of modern writing style which too easily views Homeric discourse as archaic, implicitly taking the style of classical period texts as the norm. This book concerns the way we read--or rather, imagine we are listening to--ancient Greek and Latin poetry. Through clear and penetrating analysis Mark Edwards shows how an understanding of the effects of word order and meter is vital for appreciating the meaning of classical poetry, composed for listening audiences. The first of four chapters examines Homer's emphasis of certain words by their positioning; a passage from the Iliad is analyzed, and a poem of Tennyson illustrates English parallels. The second considers Homer's techniques of disguising the break in the narrative when changing a scene's location or characters, to maintain his audience's attention. In the third we learn, partly through an English translation matching the rhythm, how Aeschylus chose and adapted meters to arouse listeners' emotions.
