Book Description
What is the true origin of the phrase 'one fell swoop'? Does the word 'honeymoon' really derive from an old Persian custom of giving the happy couple mead, a honey wine, for the first month after the wedding? The rapid growth of the internet and the use of email has increased the circulation of (usually) false tales about the evolution of language. In this entertaining and fascinating new book on the origins of words and expressions, Michael Quinion retells the mythic tales that have become popular currency - the word 'posh' deriving from 'port out, starboard home' - and also tries to find and explain the true stories behind the origins of phrases. Quinion offers explanations of why and how stories about words are created, and how misunderstanding word origins - while usually harmless - can have serious consequences.

Book Description
P&O Ferries Across Five Decades traces the roots, history and development of how P&O Ferries came to be established as Britain's biggest and leading ferry company. P&O Ferries today operates a fleet of 22 ships serving France, Belgium, the Netherlands, the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. This title traces how P&O Ferries has established itself over the last 50 years, together with the history of Thoresen Car Ferries, P&O Normandy Ferries, the Transport Ferry Service and Townsend Car Ferries, which later became Townsend Thoresen, Britain's leading and iconic ferry company serving Europe and Ireland during the seventies and eighties. The continental routes to Belgium and Holland and to Northern Ireland were originally the brainwave of Frank Bustard with his LST landing craft, which opened services on the North Sea and Irish Sea after the Second World War. This operation was later nationalised and then sold to Townsend Thoresen. The routes from Hull to Holland and Belgium, established by P&O in the sixties, were pioneers of freight operations between the UK and continental Europe with their first ships the Norwaveand Norwind. Following the demise of Townsend Thoresen and the rebranding of operations as P&O European Ferries in 1987, the operations on the North Sea were later absorbed under one management in Dover under P&O Ferries. The book also includes a short history of P&O Scottish Ferries up until its demise in 2002 when the routes to Orkney and Shetland were taken over by NorthLink.P&O Ferries Across Five Decades is being published as part of the 175th anniversary of P&O in 2012

Book Description
A behind-the-scenes photographic journey around the grandest ocean liner ever built By the 1970s it looked as if QE2 would be the last of the great transatlantic ocean liners. However, more than three decades later the world watched in awe as Queen Mary 2, the largest, longest, grandest, and most expensive ocean liner ever to be constructed, set sail on her maiden voyage in 2004. With 14 decks and beautiful lounges, dining rooms, and ballrooms, QM2 evokes the glamour of the golden age of ocean travel. This book allows the reader to experience this unique vessel from the comfort of their own home. With numerous never-before-published photographs of each of QM2’s public rooms as well as stunning exterior shots, this book is delightfully complemented by little-known facts and interesting information from Commodore R. W. Warwick, QM2’s first captain.
