Book Description
Excerpt from The Republic of Plato, Vol. 1 Tm: Republic of Plato is the longest of his works with the exception of the Laws, and is certainly the greatest of them. There are nearer approaches to modern metaphysics in the Philebus and in the Sophist; the Politicas or Statesman is more ideal; the form and institutions of the State are more clearly drawn out in the Laws as works of art, the Sympo sium and the Protagoras are of higher excellence. But no other Dialogue of Plato has the same largeness of view and the same perfection of style no other shows an equal know ledge of the world, or contains more of those thoughts which are new as well as old, and not of one age only but of all. Nowhere in Plato is there a deeper irony or a greater wealth of humour or imagery, or more dramatic power. Nor in any other of his writings is the attempt made to interweave life and speculation, or to connect politics with philosophy) The Republic is the centre aroun which the other Dialogues may be grouped here philosophy reaches the highest point (cp. Especially in Books V, VI, VII) to which ancient thinkers ever attained. Plato among the Greeks, like Bacon among the modems, was the first who conceived a method of know ledge, although neither of them always distinguished the bare outline or form from the substance of truth and both of them had to be content with an abstraction of science which was not yet realized. He was the greatest meta physical genius whom the world has seen and in him, more than in any other ancient thinker, the germs of future knowledge are contained. The sciences of logic and psycho logy, which have supplied so many instruments of thought to after-ages, are based upon the analyses of Socrates and Plato. The principles of definition, the law of contradiction, the fallacy of arguing in a circle, the distinction between the. Book Description
Excerpt from A Selection of Passages From Plato for English Readers, Vol. 1 The following collection of 'extracts from the English translation of the Dialogues of Plato' was undertaken by the editor in accordance with the wish of the late Master of Balliol. The Master himself helped to choose the passages for insertion, and the larger portion of the ms. Was submitted to him before his death. He was of opinion that the selection would be of value to readers who might be deterred by the size and cost of the complete work, as well as to young students; while the University Extension movement, and the increasing number of Colleges for Women, both in England and America, also seemed to offer a field for a compilation of this nature. Book Description
Excerpt from Plato, Vol. 1 of 4: And the Other Companions of Sokrates Tm: present work is intended as a sequel and supplement to my History of Greece. It describes a portion of Hellenic philosophy: it dwells upon eminent individuals, enquiring, theorising, reasoning, confuting, &c., as contrasted with those collective political and social manifestations which form the matter of history, and which the modern writer gathers from Herodotus, Thucydides, and Xenophon. Both Sokrates and Plato, indeed, are interesting characters in history as well as in philosophy. Under the former aspect, they were described by me in my former work as copiously as its general purpose would allow. But it is impossible to do justice to either of them - above all, to Plato, with his extreme variety and abundance - except in a book of which philosophy is the principal subject, and history only the accessory. Book Description
Excerpt from The Dialogues of Plato, Vol. 1 of 5: Translated Into English, With Analyses and Introduction I have also derived much assistance from the great work of Mr. Grote, which contains excellent analyses of the Dialogues, and is rich in original thoughts and observations. I agree with him in rejecting as futile the attempt of Schleiermacher and others to arrange the Dialogues of Plato into a harmonious whole. Any such arrangement appears to me not only to be unsupported by evidence, but to involve an ana chronism in the history Of philosophy. There is a com mon spirit in the writings of Plato, but not a unity of design in the whole, nor perhaps a perfect unity in any Single Dialogue. The hypothesis of a general plan which is worked out in the successive Dialogues is an after-thought of the critics who have attributed a system to writings belonging to an age when system had not as yet taken possession of philosophy.
