Book Description
Antenna patterns (E-plane) of an X-band horn mounted in a ground plane and covered by a plasma slab were measured. A pulsed plasma was produced by capacitor discharge in a rectangular pyrex container of 6 in. x 2 in. x 24 in. i.d. Microwave interferometer measurements of the electron density were made at 9 and 35 Gc. Antenna patterns are presented which show a sharp decrease in radiated power at certain angles corresponding to the 'optics critical angle'. Good agreement is obtained for the movement of the optics critical angle with plasma density. (Author).

Book Description
Details of the energy band structure of degenerate n-type germanium were determined by analysis of fine structure in the 4.2K volt-ampere characteristic of germanium tunnel diodes. No shift in the relative energy of the conduction band minima was observed. The band edge is found to be exponentially distributed with 1/e energies of the order of 10 MeV. There appears to be an ordering mechanism among the group V impurity atoms used as substrate dopants. (Author).

Book Description
Motion of a conductor relative to a magnetic field distorts the field. This paper considers a cylindrical slug moving in a two-dimensional magnetic field, represented by the vector potential A sub 0 theta, where the partial derivative of A sub 0 with respect to theta = 0. Maxwell's equations are solved for the distorted potential A theta in the form of a rapidly converging series A = & A sub n. The A sub n's are given in a form suitable for evaluation by a digital computer. The nonequivalence of the apparently analogous problem of a stationary slug in a time-varying field is noted and discussed. (Author).

Book Description
The mapping of extended, cultural ground targets by an airborne radar is examined using communication theory concepts including those of the antenna transfer function and the target spatial frequency spectrum. Use of the set of transfer functions that correspond to Taylor aperture distributions and specification of the targets directly in terms of their spatial frequency spectra, permits one to examine the antenna images for quality and resolution. The results obtained indicate that resolution for a class of ground targets can be much better than is predicted by the two-point Rayleigh resolution criterion. It is also true that there can be situations in which the shape of the antenna images are quite independent of the radiation pattern. Several types of spatial noise were also included in the input spectrum to investigate noise effects on image quality and resolution. (Author).

Book Description
A nearly vertical antenna wire varying in length from 3000 to 8000 ft was shock-excited by a high-voltage source. The resulting radiation fields were received at distances of about 600 km by two stations separated laterally so as to subtend an angle of about 15© at the source. The difference in wavefront arrival times at the two stations, observed for 101 transmissions, showed an average absolute deviation from the mean of about only 1/2 [mu]s. This figure includes the effects of possible source asymmetries, sferics noise, instrumental errors, and wave propagation. Typical oscillograms of antenna currents and radiation fields are given. It is shown that the amplitudes and durations of the pulse envelopes, the amplitudes and durations of the first half-cycles, and the quasi-frequencies of the pulses are in good agreement with a theory that takes energy losses into account.

Book Description
The purpose of this note Is to show that an analogue to Witt's theorem holds for a non-degenerate, non-alternating, symmetric bilinear form f over a field K of characteristic 2 where f(x, x) takes its values in a subfield K* such that K contains the square root of any element in K*. As is known, [2, p. 171] Witt's theorem does not hold in general for a field of characteristic 2. However, the following shows that an isometry of subspace can be extended if it leaves a certain unique vector invariant. The invariants of a subspace of V with respect to the orthogonal group are determined.
