A Planning and Implementation Process for the Development of Local, Short-distance Bicycle Touring Routes
Author: John Palmer Moisan-Thomas
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Bicycle trails
Languages : en
Pages : 142
Book Description
The principle objectives of this study are twofold: first, to document the planning process necessary to develop a system of local bicycle touring routes, and second, to document its application. Of the existing guidelines for planning statewide and national bicycle touring routes only two: Yates, and Bikecentennial, provide documentation of its application to a specific route. The guidelines being developed here are intended for those interested organizations and governmental agencies wishing to develop bicycle touring routes in and for their local communities. To develop these guidelines it will require a thorough discussion of how the factors involved in the planning process relate to one another, and perhaps more importantly, how they are applied when evaluating the suitability of a specific road for bicycle touring. Also of interest to anyone developing local bicycle touring routes are the techniques used to disseminate information concerning the routes to the general public. Since this has been relatively well documented for long distance cyclists in the existing literature, this study will only address those specific needs of local short-distance cyclists and suggest how they may be incorporated in a mapping and information package.
