Book Description
An examination of clean technology entrepreneurship finds that “green capitalism” is more capitalist than green. Entrepreneurs and investors in the green economy have encouraged a vision of addressing climate change with new technologies. In Planetary Improvement, Jesse Goldstein examines the cleantech entrepreneurial community in order to understand the limitations of environmental transformation within a capitalist system. Reporting on a series of investment pitches by cleantech entrepreneurs in New York City, Goldstein describes investor-friendly visions of incremental improvements to the industrial status quo that are hardly transformational. He explores a new “green spirit of capitalism,” a discourse of planetary improvement, that aims to “save the planet” by looking for “non-disruptive disruptions,” technologies that deliver “solutions” without changing much of what causes the underlying problems in the first place. Goldstein charts the rise of business environmentalism over the last half of the twentieth century and examines cleantech's unspoken assumptions of continuing cheap and abundant energy. Recounting the sometimes conflicting motivations of cleantech entrepreneurs and investors, he argues that the cleantech innovation ecosystem and its Schumpetarian dynamic of creative destruction are built around attempts to control creativity by demanding that transformational aspirations give way to short-term financial concerns. As a result, capitalist imperatives capture and stifle visions of sociotechnical possibility and transformation. Finally, he calls for a green spirit that goes beyond capitalism, in which sociotechnical experimentation is able to break free from the narrow bonds and relative privilege of cleantech entrepreneurs and the investors that control their fate.

Written by an award-winning professor at a top-ranked entrepreneurship school based on his interviews with startup founders in some of the more than 120 countries he has visited, there are no Silicon Valley stories of free office perks here. Instead, you can expect to find uniquely inspiring stories and universal lessons about life and business from interesting people and places around the world. This book will provide you with: (1) life and business tips and inspiration, provided from a fresh perspective; (2) immediately actionable ideas, including intriguing ways of overcoming obstacles related to food, water, education, energy, the environment, employment, travel, startups, entrepreneurship, meeting people, and more; (3) insight into the mindsets of people who see and create opportunities and successfully execute to make the most of those opportunities; and (4) interesting background information on people and places around the world, providing a dose of context and entertainment. Whether it is a pioneering school for the differently-abled in Peru, or nurturing local food economies with solar mini-grids in Madagascar, or rainforest stewardship in Colombia and Suriname, or startups in the wake of genocide in Timor-Leste, or sparking the rebirth of a former industrial town in the United States, you will read here stories of folks tackling tough problems with few resources. Published in book format for the first time, the author expertly presents these stories and others in what can be described as a stylistic blend of Anthony Bourdain’s Parts Unknown and NPR’s How I Built This. Please read and enjoy!

“An indispensable guide for anyone who wants to live to age 100—by making sure there’s a livable world when you get there.” —Dan Buettner, New York Times–bestselling author of The Blue Zones Do you consider yourself an environmental ally? Maybe you recycle your household goods, ride a bike, and avoid too much air travel. But did you know that the primary driver of climate change isn’t plastics, or cars, or airplanes? Did you know that it’s actually our industrialized food system? In this fascinating new book, authors Nil Zacharias and Gene Stone share new research, intriguing infographics, and compelling arguments that support what scientists across the world are beginning to affirm and uphold: By making even minimal dietary changes, anyone can have a positive, lasting impact on our planet. If you love the planet, the only way to save it is by switching out meat for plant-based meals, one bite at a time. “This fascinating, easy-to-read book will give you still another reason to eat plants and not animals: you will be doing a world of good—literally!” —Rip Esselstyn, #1 New York Times–bestselling author of Plant-Strong “Eating plants is not just good for your own health, it’s imperative for the health of the planet. Book Description
I did it my way! So can you! As the son of a teacher and a retired army officer, I would never in my wildest dreams have thought that the company I started without a penny to my name would become a multi-mullion-dollar business. Or that the president of the United States of America the land of entrepreneurs would invite me to the White House to talk about entrepreneurship or that the Turkish prime minister, who leads the 16th largest economy in the world, would hand me a letter to deliver in person to President Obama. I couldnt have imagined that I would one day be on CNN International commenting on President Obamas Washington summit or that I would be one of the 110 Dragons from 22 countries on the most important entrepreneurship TV show in the world, Dragons Den (Shark Tank in the US). I had no money, no one to help me or back me up in the beginning but all those things really happened. I wholeheartedly believe that our beautiful world is one where dreams are capable of becoming reality so long as we work towards the realization of those dreams. I wish for everyone to be able to look at the world in the same optimistic way as I do, to see the bigger picture in the same frame. If the son of a teacher and army officer can find success, then I am sure that you can too, but probably much more easily. I am confident that, once you start reading this book, you wont be able to put it down.
