Book Description
Excerpt from Pioneer Tales of the Oregon Trail and of Jefferson County The author has lived in Jefferson County nearly forty years, and has enjoyed the friendship of nearly all of the old settlers. He has been identified with them in many associations and gatherings having for their object the preservation of the history of the past. He served as Secretary of the Old Settlers Association for many years. This has enabled him to collect much pioneer history. The old settlers are rapidly diminishing in numbers. They alone can best tell the unwritten incidents of early days, much of which is already entangled with legend and tradition. Many incidents have become greatly distorted, oftentimes unrecognizable with the facts. He began to gather all data and reduce them to readable form, largely from the facts as above mentioned, and also for the reason that little had been made by others. The work was started by the author in 1909, and since that time great interest has been taken in it by the people who have aided in the work of discovering and preserving relics and landmarks, especially of the Old Oregon Trail. Book Description
The Revenger: The Life and Times of Wild Bill Hickok examines Wild Bill’s life in the context of 19th Century American history, from his birth, through his early manhood, and to his eventual demise. Woven into his life story are the significant role played by the Civil War in the development of his character and philosophy, the role played by popular media in the creation of his legendary status, and the changing of the western landscape and lifestyle that began to eliminate the need for gunmen such as Wild Bill. The book discusses Hickok’s early jobs in law enforcement and his associations with other significant westerners and recounts the events that transformed Hickok from a formidable lawman into a national celebrity and popular hero. Details of Hickok’s most famous gunfights, including weapons used and participants and outcomes and, of course, the end of his career including his famous death at the hands of an assassin in a saloon in Deadwood South Dakota are all explored. The book also incorporates changing views of historiographical interpretation of lawmen/gunmen in general and Wild Bill in particular. The book will have extensive illustrations—archival photos of Wild Bill, his contemporaries, his guns, etc.

Book Description
In 1867 the total number of buffaloes in the trans-Missouri region was conservatively estimated at fifteen million. By the end of the 1880s that figure had dwindled to a few hundred. The destruction of the great herds is the theme of this book. Mari Sandoz's canvas is vast, but it is charged with color and excitement—accounts of Indian ambushes, hairbreadth escapes, gambling and gunfights, military expeditions, famous frontier characters (Wild Bill Hickok, Lonesome Charlie Reynolds, Buffalo Bill, Sheridan, Custer, and Indian Chiefs Whistler, Yellow Wolf, Spotted Tail, and Sitting Bull).
