Author: Samuel Penniman Bates
Publisher: Genealogical Publishing Com
ISBN: 0806306769
Category : Greene County (Pa.)
Languages : en
Pages : 346
Book Description
This useful offprint contains biographical sketches of approximately 800 southwestern Pennsylvania residents. The sketches are of Greene County families predominantly, though unavoidably some sketches concern families of Washington or Fayette County provenance. Typical sketches mention the date and place of birth and marriage of the biographee; the name of his wife and the names of his children; names with dates and places of birth of his parents and often grandparents; sometimes the name of the first ancestor in America; and details of religion, education, military service, occupation, home, and residence.

Cumberland Township and Carmichaels
Author: Shelley McMinn Anderson
Publisher: Arcadia Publishing Library Editions
ISBN: 9781540216304
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 98
Book Description
Cumberland Township, located in the northeastern portion of Greene County, was one of Pennsylvania's original townships. The history of this area shows that settlers were here prior to 1760. The settlement known as Old Town was founded in 1767. In 1796, Carmichaels was named in honor of Maj. James Carmichael, a Revolutionary War soldier and pioneer settler. Carmichael had traded his land in what is now the town of Jefferson for land owned by Thomas Hughes along the banks of Muddy Creek in Old Town. Carmichaels became home to the Greene Academy, notably, the first school of higher learning west of the Allegheny Mountains. The Carmichaels Covered Bridge spans Muddy Creek separating Old Town from Carmichaels. Both the Greene Academy and the Carmichaels Covered Bridge are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
