Book Description
The paragon of physical perfection and a sparkling example of Earth's forces at work, the diamond has fascinated all realms of society, from Russian tsars and Hollywood stars to scientists and brides-to-be. The Nature of Diamonds is an authoritative and richly illustrated look at nature's most coveted gem. Leading geologists, gemologists, physicists, and cultural observers cover every facet of the stone, from its formation in the depths of the Earth and its explosive ascent to the surface, to its economic, regal, social, and technological roles. The book takes the reader to cutting-edge research on the frontiers of diamond exploration and exploitation, from Arctic wastes to laboratories that create industrial diamonds for cutting tools that slice through rock. Charting the history of mining from its origins in India and Brazil, the book follows the diamond rush in South Africa to today's high-tech enterprises. It provides a glimpse into the economics of the diamond trade, and an overview of diamond cutting, from the rough uncut stones in early Indian and Roman jewelry to the multifaceted stones we see today. The cultural history of the diamond as both a revered and a social symbol is explored, from its early history as the exclusive property of royalty to today's brilliant-laden jewelry as an emblem of wealth and status. The engaging text is complemented by more than 200 lavish illustrations which span fine art, earth science, and cultural studies and capture the brilliance and beauty of this extraordinary gem.

Book Description
DEADLY DIAMOND by D. J. Martin The Special Investigator team of Matt Diamond and Natasha Cutter had returned to their new office in Beverly Hills, California, and were going over a large list of potential clients when one caught their eye. They had received a call from Ms. Gloria Goldstein regarding the murder of her parents and the theft of a large twenty-carat light pink diamond from their jewelry store. The police had been of little help, and she was most anxious for them to investigate the tragedy. Although events began in Beverly Hills, the location quickly changed to Johannesburg, South Africa, which meant that the globe-traveling team would again return to the country where they had worked in their previous case. The hunt for the thieves and murderers had to begin at the original source, the antiques studio of Martin Clause in Johannesburg. He was the first to purchase what he named the Empress Diamond for $500,000, then sold it to the Goldsteins for a solid $1,000,000 a few days later. The Empress, from Tanzania, was the largest light pink diamond ever found. The Empress Diamond would be worth millions more if it could reach the United States. The Goldsteins provided the way to get the precious stone to the American market. Three former American Special Forces veterans also entered into pursuit of the Empress, as well as a sinister figure with the code name The Red Fox, who would pay any price to obtain the Empress for billionaire Sir Fredrick Marsh. Marsh wanted to give it to his wife as a birthday gift. It was up to Matt Diamond and Natasha Cutter to follow the trail of the Deadly Diamond, a trail that would result in more deaths and a stone that many believed was cursed. Intrigue and suspense – who has the Empress now? – make this an exciting read, and the ending will surprise the reader with its strange twist of fate.

Book Description
Diamond is an extreme material among possible atomic aggregations in nature, and as such has many extreme properties. This unique position makes it a fascinating subject both for science and for applications. This has been particularly true in recent years, since the surprising discovery at Union Carbide (1953) of the possibility of chemical vapour deposition of diamond films at low pressures, where diamond is metastable with respect to graphite. This discovery cleared the way to the development of economical deposition techniques that have been obtaining progressively better-quality diamond, both pure and doped, in a controlled way and for a variety of applications. The remarkable properties and applications range from mechanical (the extreme hardness, tensile and compressive strength, wear performance) to thermal (the highest conductivity), optical (wide range of transparency), chemical (inertness to most chemicals), biological (biocompatibility) and electronic (high electronic carrier mobility, large band gap and dielectric breakdown strength, negative electron affinity), with the simultaneous presence of so many extraordinary qualities often resulting in added value for a given application. We are presently at a turning point in the development of diamond physics and applications. While some achievements can be considered well established, on the other hand, new opportunities and challenges are facing the scientific community, particularly with regard to novel exciting deposition processes and techniques or new properties and applications in electronics. This Enrico Fermi Course on "The Physics of Diamond" is particularly focused on the new developments and prospects, which may well constitute a reference point for a new generation of scientists at what may possibly be the beginning of a new age in diamond. The course attracted several of the most distinguished experts in the field as lecturers and an audience of almost as distinguished students and observers from 19 countries. Participation and discussions were lively to the very last day, ranging from traditional diamond physics to new diamond physics, and from well-known applications to the new exciting opportunities. The material in this volume is organized in the following way: the first part (13 lectures) is essentially devoted to growth and structure, the second part to properties and applications, with a closing lecture exploring new exotic diamonds in the distant future. The earlier lectures extensively cover the many processes of plasma chemical vapour deposition, including advanced contributions in theoretical modelling of these processes. Novel deposition mechanisms are considered: low-temperature CVD and laser-activated processes, including the so-called QQC experiments. This first part closes with a discussion of amorphous phases. In the second part, particular emphasis is placed on electronic properties and applications. This includes an extensive discussion of doping and, in addition, the promising perspectives of diamond as an electron emitter. Its newly discovered remarkable electron affinity properties lead to a new dimension in research and development, of great strategical importance for an increasing role of diamond in electronics.
