Another object has been to furnish a more full account of those countries in which, as the seats of the most advanced civilization, and the centres of movement, the reader would naturally feel the greatest interest. The Introduction includes much valuable scien tific information bearing on the subject of physical geography. The Picturesque Readers were not made merely for the amusement of pupils, but especially to interest and instruct. They should be used, then, as a regular and serious means of imparting information.
