Book Description
Excerpt from Physiology of the Special Senses I hope that this volume may be of service to two classes of readers. Students of Psychology may desire to obtain more information regarding the physiological side of the senses than is usually found in works professedly dealing with psychology. I think such students will find this book of use if they read it in conjunction with Professor Myers' admirable treatise on Experimental Psychology. Another class of readers which I have had in mind are those who are either taking up physiology as a branch of liberal education, or with a view of presenting themselves for certain higher professional examinations. In either case a somewhat more detailed knowledge of physiology is required than can be obtained from the general textbooks of the subject, while time hardly permits of much use being made of original sources of information. The necessity in such cases arises for books intermediate between the text-book and the original memoir. In most branches of physiology this want is abundantly supplied, but I am not acquainted with any such aids to study in the case of the senses. This hook may help to fill the gap. Book Description
Excerpt from The Physiology of the Senses IT is the aim of this book to give a succinct account of the functions of the organs of sense as these are found in man and the higher animals. The Authors have refrained from discussing with fulness of detail either the comparative physiology of the senses or the numerous interesting questions of a psychological character that inevitably arise in connection with the study of the mechanism of sensory perceptions. Each of these aspects of the subject would require a volume for itself. On the other hand, a perusal of this volume, which has been written so as to be readily understood even by those who have not made physiology a special subject of study, will be a suitable preparation for entering upon the more recondite questions that underlie physiological psychology. The Authors have endeavoured to treat the physiology of the senses as fully as space would allow, and have also suggested comparatively simple experiments by which any one interested in the subject may test some of the statements for himself. They would also direct attention to the last chapter, in which an attempt is made. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from An American Text-Book of Physiology, Vol. 2: Muscle and Nerve; Central Nervous System; The Special Senses; Special Muscular Mechanisms; Reproduction The actual nmennt of material in the book remains substantially the same as in the first edition, although, naturally, very many changes have been made. Even in the short time that has elapsed since the appearance of the first edition there has been much progress in physiology, as the result of the constant activity of experimenters in this and the related sciences in all parts of the world, and an effort has been made by the various contributors to keep pace with this progress. Statements and theories that have been shown to be mung or improbable have been eliminated, and the new facts discovered and the newer points of view have been incorporated so far as possible. Such changes are found scattered throughout the book. The only distinctly new matter that can be referred to specifically is found in the section upon the Central Nervous System, and in a short section upon the modern ideas and nomenclature of physical chemistry, with reference especially to the processes of osmosis and diffusion. The section dealing with the Central Nervous System has been recast in large part, with the intention of making it more suitable to the actual needs of medical students; while a brief presen tation of some of the elementary conceptions of physical chemistry seems to be necessary at the present time, owing to the large part that these views are taking in current discussions in physiological and medical literature. Book Description
Excerpt from The Physiology of Man, Vol. 5 of 5: Designed to Represent the Existing State of Physiological Science, as Applied to the Functions of the Human Body; Special Senses; Generation The present volume completes the task, begun eleven years ago, of preparing a work, intended to represent the existing state of physiological science, as applied to the f unc tions of the human body. The kindly reception which the first four volumes have received has done much to sustain the author in an undertaking, the magnitude of which he has appreciated more and more as the work has progressed.
