Book Description
This book follows another by the same author, published in 1977, which the author considered as ``a first attempt to put some order in the house of clay petrology''. That book was described as ``an excellent first attack on clay mineral petrology... informative, and stimulating because of the method of presentation and the open-door treatment of the subject. Not only clay-mineral scientists but petrologists in general must read this first book on clay mineral petrology.'' (Earth Science Reviews). This book describes clay mineral occurrence in terms of the physical and chemical forces which influence it. It includes a geological description of mineral occurrence, a definition of the major features of clay mineral chemical composition, and an indication of the physical-chemical boundaries of these occurrences. It also presents general patterns for the geological environments of weathering, sedimentation, burial diagenesis, deep sea basalt alteration, hydrothermal alteration of acidic rocks and chemical precipitation in acidic and basic environments. The major clay groups are related to one another as they occur in geological systems through the use of graphical analysis. The author has thoroughly reviewed the relevant literature for the last 25 years. The data and analyses obtained and presented in this book will not only make interesting reading, but will also prove extremely useful to those involved with studies in deep sea research, mining geology, petroleum geology, agronomy and civil engineering.

Book Description
This book is a collection of articles on a variety of logically interlinked problems relating to the study of the earth and the evolution of the different sciences that engage in this study, the geosciences, as they are sometimes called: the nature and place of modern geology among other sciences, the tendencies in its development, the specific features of the so-called geological form of motion of matter and its connection with other forms of motion, the place of geophysics and geochemistry in the study of the planet and in the system of sciences investigating the earth, some philosophical aspects of the transformation of nature. On a number of questions the authors express different points of view, and the reader is able to judge for himself of the merits and demerits of their theories. The volume will no doubt be of interest to geologists, geophysicists, geochemists, geographers and philosophers, to say nothing of the ever growing circle of inquisitive readers who take an interest in the exploration of our native planet and the philosophical and methodological questions deriving therefrom. The papers were originally presented at joint the teorical conferences of philosophical (methodological) seminars scientific establishments of the U.S.S.R. Academy of Sciences, The papers prepared for this collection were revised and supplemented by their authors.

Book Description
The chemical, physical and physicochemical processes that are at work in the depths of the Earth, both connected and unconnected with man's activities and coupled to the relevant properties and characteristics of the rocks, began to be intensively studied in the early decades of the present century. Until then little evidence had been available concerning the physical and physicochemical properties of rocks, and the data that existed were one-sided and uncoordinated. Both in this country and elsewhere an interest in investigating natural processes, the processes taking place in rocks, and the properties and characteristics of rocks arose as a result of the intensive development of oil and gas engineering, the mining of coal and ore, the construction of large projects, railroads, etc. Information on the properties of rocks was needed, in particular, to facilitate progress in engineering, technology, and geological and geophysical methods of prospecting for extracting and processing mineral deposits. In the late 1920s and early 1930s, methods involving intrinsic and induced pola rization were introduced. Moreover, little information was available concerning the petrophysical and petrochemical quantities characterizing the different contribution of various rocks to electrical processes. Electrical methods were followed by other methods of applied physics based on the novel electrical, thermal, magnetic, nuclear, elastic and other properties of rocks.
