This book brings together for the first time the results of research on the thermal properties and temperature-related behavior of rocks with their contained fluids, under subsurface environmental conditions. These data are of increasing importance with increased application of underground processes involving high temperature and, in some cases, low temperature environments. Some of the important processes are described in which thermal data are needed. Chapters deal with thermal properties of rocks, including heat capacities, thermal conductivities and thermal diffusivities under conditions simulating subsurface environments. Discussion about the difficulty in measuring thermal properties of rock/fluid systems is included along with newly-developed models for predicting thermal properties from more-easily measured properties. The effects of thermal reactions in rocks, differential thermal expansion, and thermal alterations are discussed in separate chapters. The effects of temperature on rock properties, as distinct from the irreversible effects of heating, are reviewed. Lastly the book deals with wellbore applications of thermal and high-temperature behavior of rocks and methods of deducing thermal properties from geophysical logs run in boreholes. Appendices include thermal units conversion factors and thermal properties of some typical reservoir rocks and fluids.

This study is part of a program conducted by the Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratories on methods of detection and utilization of lunar water resources. The two principal objectives of this study were: 1. To aid in the assessment of lunar water extraction processes by obtaining data on the physical, thermal and mechanical properties of hydrated minerals and rock systems, and 2. To analyze the heat and mass transfer associated with several possible lunar water extraction processes, using data obtained from literature and from experimental studies. Particular emphasis was to be placed on heat transfer and control in fractured and unfractured rock systems containing hydrated minerals. Literature data on the density, thermal conductivity, specific heat, permeability, porosity, thermal diffusivity, and moisture content of rock systems are assembled and tabulated. Experimental data for six typical rocks were obtained and compared to literature data. The apparatus and methods used in the experimental program are described. The results of calculations of the heat and mass transfer associated with extraction of water from subsurface deposits and mined deposits are presented. (Author).

It is difficult for readers interested in this field to obtain an overview from the numerous, specialized papers that have been written on geother mics. This book is meant to provide a thorough introduction to the subject, although the coverage is not exhaustive is detail. Geothermics is taught at universities and technical institutes, as part of the curriculum in geology.
