Book Description
"PH and Brain Function offers thorough coverage of this increasingly important area of research, beginning with the fundamental concepts, which include methodological and theoretical issues such as the measurement of pH and the concept of pH in neurobiology. It explores aspects of regulation and modulation of intracellular pH in brain cells, surveys the changes in pH that occur with neural activity and how these changes affect neural activity, and discusses the role of pH in the pathophysiology of neurological diseases." "pH and Brain Function is an important resource for researchers in all areas of neuroscience as well as cell biology and physiology." --Book Jacket.

Book Description
This volume foxuses on the status of Ca2+ ions in regulation of phototransduction, light adaptation and the recovery phase in vertebrate photoreceptors. Particular emphasis is given to Ca2+-binding proteins and their targets, among them particulate guanylate cyclases, GPCR-coupled kinases and cyclic nucleotide-gated cation channels. The book also expands our understanding of events invovling Ca2+ in the retinal pigment epithelium, in synaptic transmission and secondary retinal neurons. A significant part of the book is dedicated to the role of Ca2+ in invertebrate phototransduction, the best-studied phospholipid-mediated signal transduction pathway. Several chapters explore association of gene defects with human retina disease and the generation of animal models of retinal degeneration.

Book Description
The mechanism by which photoreceptor cells in the eyes of higher animals absorb light, giving rise to receptor potentials that initiate the visual process, is a subject of active research in biophysics today. The pace of this research and its multidisciplinary nature have made it difficult for the nonexpert to keep abreast of new discoveries. This book aims to provide a more coherent, compact summary of our knowledge about the field that has been available, serving as an up-to-date introduction to the role of photoreceptors in vision. The book is a self-contained, concise handbook for the reader who has at least a college level knowledge if cell biology, biochemistry, physical chemistry, neurobiology and physics. The authors describe the physical parameters of light and proceed to describe the mechanisms by which photoreceptors extract information about each parameter. The discussion of mechanisms is organized by discipline, following the general sequence of cellular morphology, visual pigment chemistery, and receptor physiology. Photoreceptors: their role in vision is an integrated sourcebook which will serve the novice as a 'stepping stone' to the vast and exciting scientific literature of the field.

Book Description
Store-operated calcium channels are found in most animal cells and regulate many cellular functions including cell division, growth, differentiation, and cell death. This volume provides a concise and informative overview of the principles of store-operated calcium entry and the key developments in the field from researchers who have led these advances. The overall goal of the volume is to provide interested students and investigators with sufficient information to enable a broad understanding of the progress and current excitement in the field. The volume contains a wealth of information that even experienced investigators in the field will find useful. - The volume provides a comprehensive overview of the mechanisms and functions of store-operated calcium channels - Contributors are authoritative researchers who have produced important advances in the field - The volume is well-illustrated with cartoons and data to facilitate easy comprehension of the subject

very important, especially the comparison of vertebrate and invertebrate transduction mechanisms. The workshop was very successful and the outcome of the discussions proved it worth the effort. To no small extent has that success been made possible by Dr. Silke Bernhard who with a combination of authority and charm together with her extremely efficient and dedicated staff organized this workshop, providing the conditions and framework for a scientific debate of outstanding quality in a friendly and pleasant atmosphere. The great majority of participants were also very committed to making this workshop successful. Besides the reports of the four discussion groups, this publication contains the background papers which were revised by the authors partly as a result of suggestions of some participants. I hope this book will give a fair overview of the state of our knowledge of research in visual transduction. It was a pleasure to edit, especially because of the friendly and very efficient commitment of K. Geue, J. Lupp, and A. Eckert and the cooperativeness of most of the contributors. Particularly I would like to acknowledge gratefully the extensive efforts and patience of the four rapporteurs, M.L. Applebury, W.H. Miller, W.G. Owen, and E.N. Pugh, Jr., in compiling, writing, and revising the group reports. REFERENCES (1) Altman, J. 1985. Sensory transduction, new visions in photoreception. Nature 313: 264-265. (2) Hagins, W.A. 1972. Book Description
Classically, photo atlases of retinal dystrophies have been divided into sections that describe and depict a particular retinal finding or disease, after which a differential diagnosis of potential diseases or mutated genes is provided. However, given the rapid improvement in molecular diagnostics, and the exponential increase in our understanding of the phenotypes caused by each mutated gene, the paradigm has changed. Physicians are now more interested in the variable expressivity associated with mutations in each individual gene. Therefore, Retinal Dystrophy Gene Atlas catalogs the different phenotypes that have been reported with each mutated gene. Each section describes a gene and its known clinical phenotypes and features of disease, along with retinal photos of affected patients. Written by prominent retinal dystrophy specialists from the largest dystrophy centers worldwide, Retinal Dystrophy Gene Atlas contains more than 80 chapters, each of which describes the clinical and photographic manifestations of a specific gene. The chapters include stunning clinical color photographs of the retina, autofluorescence imaging, electrophysiologic findings, and cross-sectional imaging. Retinal Dystrophy Gene Atlas serves as a resource to aid genetic diagnosis in patients with retinal dystrophies.
