Wenn mich niemand darnach fragt, weiß ich es, wenn ich es aber einem, der mich fragt, erklären sollte, weiß ich es nicht;...“. Schon vor etwa 1600 Jahren hat Aurelius Augustinus unser Problem mit dem Phänomen „Zeit“ recht präzise auf den Punkt gebracht: Es handelt sich hierbei um etwas, das wir alle kennen, erleben, das uns alle betrifft und beeinflusst – Bemühungen, dieses Phänomen zu beschreiben aber enden in aller Regel in mehr oder weniger komplizierten Theorien, welche immer noch nicht die gewünschte Antwort auf die Frage „Was ist Zeit?“ zu geben vermögen. Die Frage nach dem Wesen der Zeit lässt sich ganz offensichtlich nicht so leicht beantworten wie die Frage nach dem Wesen irgendeines anderen beliebigen Gegenstandes. Das Problem lässt sich dabei recht präzise verorten: Der Versuch, „Zeit“ greifbar erklären zu wollen, bringt unser Anschauungsvermögen schnell an seine Grenzen. Anschaulich vorstellen können wir uns nur Dinge, die in irgendeiner Weise unsere Sinne ansprechen – die wir sehen, riechen, fühlen, schmecken oder ertasten können. Dennoch kommen wir nach kurzer Überlegung zu dem Schluss, dass „Zeit“ existieren muss. Eine Antwort auf die Frage, was Zeit ist, wird diese Seminararbeit sicher auch nicht geben können. Die Methoden der modernen Physik haben sich in der Vergangenheit als überaus tauglich, ja sogar unumgänglich erwiesen bei der Beschäftigung mit diesem Thema. Relativitätstheorie und Quantentheorie konnten schon viel Erstaunliches zutage fördern und viele Unklarheiten beseitigen. Aus diesen Einsichten ergaben sich etliche neue Zeitbegriffe. So musste beispielsweise die Vorstellung einer absoluten Zeit aufgegeben werden, die ursprüngliche Substanzauffasung der Zeit erwies sich als fragwürdig und der relationale Aspekt der Zeit kam ins Spiel. Daher soll nicht der Versuch einer Antwort auf die Frage „Was ist Zeit?“ hier im Mittelpunkt stehen, sondern mehr die unterschiedlichen Zeitbegriffe und die Zeit als Relation.

This book presents a collection of authoritative contributions on the concept of time in early twentieth-century philosophy. It is structured in the form of a thematic atlas: each section is accompanied by relevant elementary logic maps that reproduce in a “spatial” form the directionalities (arguments and/or discourses) reported on in the text. This book is dedicated to the memory of Professor Henryk Mehlberg, primarily because I want to recall his name to readers in the West; for, although Professor Mehlberg was the foremost Polish philosopher in the field of philosophy of time-in that version which is related to twentieth century physics-his fundamental work concerning time was published in English 43 years after its original publication (cf. Mehlberg, 1980). I am deeply indebted to Henryk Mehlberg. For two years after the Second World War, I was his student at Wroclaw University (where he lectured on philosophy and mathematical logic). At that time, I developed, under his influence, a long-life fascination with the philosophy of time, and was taught by him how to approach these problems effectively. My research in this field has resulted in three books. The first, Prop erties of Time, published (in Polish) in 1970, concerns the topological properties and properties of symmetry (homogeneity and anisotropy) of time. The second, The Nature of Time, published (in Polish) in 1975, looks at possible definitions of time within both theories of relativity. The present book is the third, originally published (in Polish) in 1979; it concerns philosophical problems of past, present, and future and is here presented in English to reach a wider audience.

Michael Tooley presents a major new philosophical study of time and its relation to causation. The nature of time has always been one of the most fascinating and perplexing problems of philosophy. In recent years it has become the focus of vigorous debate between advocates of rival theories, as traditional, 'tensed' accounts of time, which hold that time has a direction and that the flow of time is part of the nature of the universe, have been challenged by 'tenseless' accounts of time, according to which past, present, and future are merely subjective features of experience, rather than objective features of events. Time, Tense, and Causation offers a new approach, in many ways intermediate between these two rivals. Tooley shares with tensed approaches the view that the universe is dynamic, holding that the past and the present are real while the future is not; but he rejects the view that this entails that there are irreducible tensed facts. Tooley's approach accounts for time in terms of its relation to causation: he argues that the direction of time is based upon the direction of causation, and that the key to understanding the dynamic nature of the universe is to understand the nature of causation. He also offers analyses of tensed concepts, and discusses semantic issues concerning truth and time. Finally, addressing the formidable difficulties posed for tensed accounts of time by the Special Theory of Relativity, he suggests that a modified version of the theory, compatible with the account of time in this book, is to be preferred to the standard version. Time, Tense, and Causation is rich in sophisticated and stimulating discussions of many of the deepest problems of metaphysics.
