Book Description
This volume arose from the scientific program of the XIIth International Congress of Pharmacology, held in Montreal, Canada, July 24-29, 1994. The scientific program included plenary lectures and symposia, in addition to poster presentations and colloquia. The abstracts of the Congress presentations were published as .supplement 1 of volume 72 by the Cana dian Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology. The Congress organizers sought a more expansive treatment of the Congress proceedings and appointed Dr. A. Claudio Cuello to coordinate preparation of the present volume; Dr. Brian Collier was chair of the scientific program committee and, thus, also collaborated on this work. The objective that we pursued was to produce a volume of reasonable size which would feature all of the plenary lectures and symposia from those authors who agreed to participate. To this end, we solicited mini reviews from plenary lecturers and asked symposia organizers to coordi nate a single short-review covering the individual topics within their event. Those who accepted this challenge are evident in this volume. We express our gratitude to these authors for doing so, and for exercising considerable ingenuity in completing their task within a reasonable time.

Book Description
The need for effective therapy to treat Alzheimer’s disease is greater than ever, but there is still no drug therapy that can stop or reverse the progression of the disease. There is, however, a great deal of anticipation over the imminent development of effective therapies as a result of the identification of promising targets for drug development. This book investigates these targets and examines ongoing strategies to develop effective therapies for this devastating neurodegenerative condition.

Book Description
This book is the first definitive overview on adenosine receptor antagonists and their application to the treatment of Parkinson's Disease. The effect of these novel non-dopamine drugs on vitro and in vivo systems clearly shows their potential for the treatment of this debilitating disease. This book covers how the Parkinson's disease antagonist drug, A2A, has been researched, developed, and tested. It is an essential book for researchers interested in the basal ganglia, purine biology, and Parkinson's Disease. - Discusses the discovery and development of a novel non-dopaminomimetic agent for Parkinson's disease - Provides the first definitive overview of adenosine antagonists and their role in the treatment of Parkinson's disease - Presents a new mechanism of action of adenosine A2A receptor antagonists in motor function Proposes a hypothesis of adenosine A2A receptor function in the striatum - Comprehensive overview of adenosine, its receptor subtypes, their antagonists/agonists from biochemistry, molecular biology, medicinal chemistry, physiology, pharmacology, and neurochemistry viewpoints

Book Description
In this long-awaited 2nd edition of a classic book, leading neuroscientists critically review the latest advances made in our understanding of the fundamental molecular, biochemical, behavioral, and pharmacological properties of GABA receptors. The distinguished contributors clarify the approaches being taken to identify and develop new therapeutic agents for such neurological and psychiatric disorders as epilepsy, memory loss, affective illnesses, and psychosis. They also examine the therapeutic potential that remains in the cloning and expression of the GABA transporter, and in developing additional agents capable of regulating GABA receptor function. The book will play a key role in further expanding the list of drugs that interact with the GABA neurotransmitter system.

Book Description
This invaluable book is aimed at those who are concerned about Chinese medicine — how it works, what its current state is and, most important, how to make full use of it. The audience therefore includes clinicians who want to serve their patients better and patients who are eager to supplement their own conventional treatment. The authors of the book belong to three different fields, viz. clinical and basic sciences, Chinese medicine and pharmacology. They provide information from their areas of expertise and concern, attempting to make it comprehensive for users. The approach is macroscopic and philosophical; readers convinced of the philosophy are to seek specific assistance.

Book Description
This monograph explores the relationships between cell signaling and the cytoplasmic cytoskeleton in fundamental cell processes, thus bridging the gap between two very active aspects of molecular cell biology. It covers the two main - and reciprocal - questions of these relationships: How are structure and function of the cytoskeleton affected by external signals which impinge on the cell? How does the cytoskeleton influence the cellular signaling processes which determine cell behavior?
