Permanent Sample Plot (PSP) Field Procedures Manual
Author: Alberta. Forest Management Branch
Publisher: Alberta Sustainable Resource Development, Public Lands and Forests Division, Forest Management Branch
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 92
Book Description
An accurate method of determining forest growth & yield is through the use of permanent sample plots (PSPs). In Alberta, the main objectives of PSP sampling are to assess stand dynamics, to provide a database that can be used to develop yield curves, and to provide representative areas for study of management techniques. This manual describes field procedures for establishing & measuring PSPs. It includes information on the establishment sequence, recording PSP data, tree measurement, plot sizes, remeasurement procedures & schedules, plot photography, plot layout & maintenance, inspection procedures, and plot assessment. Appendices include details on data reporting requirements & codes used in Alberta and additional background on various measurement & reporting procedures.

New Brunswick Permanent Sample Plot Database (PSPDB V1.0)
Author: Kevin B. Porter
Publisher: Fredericton, N.B. : Atlantic Forestry Centre
ISBN:
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 76
Book Description
The Canadian Forest Service and the New Brunswick Department of Natural Resources & Energy have co-operated to develop an interactive database system in support of a program that includes about 2,500 permanent sample plots representative of the entire provincial forest. This report presents an overview of the permanent sample plot program, the database structure and functions, installation instructions, and a user tutorial. Selected calculated outputs from the system are also provided, including volume, periodic annual increment, and periodic mortality, by geographic area and by species class. Appendices include background information on tree height & volume calculations, database field names & codes, data validation checks, and how measurement data are loaded into the database.

Patterns and Processes in Forest Landscapes
Author: Raffaele Lafortezza
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1402085044
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 434
Book Description
Increasing evidence suggests that the composition and spatial configuration – the pattern – of forest landscapes affect many ecological processes, including the movement and persistence of particular species, the susceptibility and spread of disturbances such as fires or pest outbreaks, and the redistribution of matter and nutrients. Understanding these issues is key to the successful management of complex, multifunctional forest landscapes, and landscape ecology, based on a foundation of island bio-geography and meta-population dynamic theories, provides the rationale to deal with this pattern-to-process interaction at different spatial and temporal scales. This carefully edited volume represents a stimulating addition to the international literature on landscape ecology and resource management. It provides key insights into some of the applicable landscape ecological theories that underlie forest management, with a specific focus on how forest management can benefit from landscape ecology, and how landscape ecology can be advanced by tackling challenging problems in forest (landscape) management. It also presents a series of case studies from Europe, Asia, North America, Africa and Australia exploring the issues of disturbance, diversity, management, and scale, and with a specific focus on how human intervention affects forest landscapes and, in turn, how landscapes influence humans and their culture. An important reference for advanced students and researchers in landscape ecology, conservation biology, forest ecology, natural resource management and ecology across multiple scales, the book will also appeal to researchers and practitioners in reserve design, ecological restoration, forest management, landscape planning and landscape architecture.
