An accurate method of determining forest growth & yield is through the use of permanent sample plots (PSPs). In Alberta, the main objectives of PSP sampling are to assess stand dynamics, to provide a database that can be used to develop yield curves, and to provide representative areas for study of management techniques. The Canadian Forest Service and the New Brunswick Department of Natural Resources & Energy have co-operated to develop an interactive database system in support of a program that includes about 2,500 permanent sample plots representative of the entire provincial forest. Increasing evidence suggests that the composition and spatial configuration – the pattern – of forest landscapes affect many ecological processes, including the movement and persistence of particular species, the susceptibility and spread of disturbances such as fires or pest outbreaks, and the redistribution of matter and nutrients.
