Book Description
Settlers arrived in Pepperell as early as 1655, attracted by good farmland and the waters of the Nashua and Nissitissit Rivers. In a petition granted in 1742 by the general court, the area today recognized as Pepperell became known as Groton West Parish. Eventually the town was named in honor of Sir William Pepperell of Kittery, Maine. The settlers of Pepperell were patriotic and hardworking. Colonel William Prescott served admirably in the Battle of Bunker Hill, and in the late nineteenth century the town became well known for its very prosperous paper-making industry. Pepperell also came to attract visitors in the mid-nineteenth century, as it was home to five stagecoach relay stops and the Babbatassett Driving Park. In this marvelous new photographic history, author Joanne Saunders Foley chronicles the development of Pepperell from the mid-nineteenth to the early twentieth century. Come along and enjoy vintage views of celebrations, parades, and firemens' musters, and read all about the "witch" of North Pepperell. This marvelous new book gives form to many of the people, places, and events that have contributed to the history of the town.

Book Description
Pepperell (an artist and author of The post-human condition) and Punt (a filmmaker who has previously researched 19th century technology) believe the "digital age" paradigm being applied to the new century has too many intellectual restrictions in its reductionist, on-off logic. Instead, they propose the metaphor of a living "postdigital" membrane to describe the dynamic and unpredictable flow between art, computing, philosophy, and science. "The power of the membrane metaphor," they write, "is its dual and contradictory function: like a transparent wall, it both connects and divides." They employ the metaphor here to explore how our understandings of imagination, technology, and human desire are changing in whatever one chooses to call this new era. Distributed by ISBS. c. Beautifully adapted to their world, they range from tiny drift fish and slow plankton-straining whale sharks to high-energy, streamlined predators such as tuna and marlin. Fishes of the Open Ocean, from Julian Pepperell, one of Australia's best-known marine biologists and world authority on oceanic fishes, is the first book to describe these fishes and detail their biology and the complex, often fragile world in which they live.
