Book Description
Liver disease in children is increasing in prevalence, placing a huge burden on healthcare systems and often requiring long-term management. Offering an integrative approach to the science and clinical practice of pediatric hepatology, this is the definitive reference text for improved diagnosis and treatment strategies. In the new edition of this authoritative text, chapters have been thoroughly revised in line with major advances in the field, such as recognizing the increased frequency of fatty liver disease, and how genetic testing has the potential to establish earlier diagnoses for a variety of diseases. Disorders covered include cholestasis, metabolic disorders and hepatitis, with their presentation across the spectrum of infancy, childhood and adolescence discussed. The indications and surgical aspects of liver transplant are explained and post-transplant care is described in detail. This is a valuable resource for pediatricians, hepatologists, gastroenterologists and all clinicians involved in the care of children with liver diseases.

Book Description
In recent years, substantial progress has been made in the approaches to diagnosis and treatment of severe liver diseases in the pediatric ICU, from various forms of liver failure and hepatitis to acute and chronic liver disease. New techniques and tools are being utilized to prevent patients from experiencing complications and for patients in recovery from operations on the native or donor liver. This book describes the clinical presentation and management of liver diseases in the intensive care unit with the pediatric patient in mind. In addition, advances in bone marrow transplantation, cardiac-generated liver disorders and new therapeutic approaches, such as artificial liver support, are discussed in detail. Presenting the current available knowledge in a compelling form, Liver Diseases in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit is a valuable resource for pediatric gastroenterologists and hepatologists, pediatricians and intensivists.

Book Description
Alcoholic liver disease has once again entered our collective conscience. A paper in 2012 showed the utility of orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) in acute alcoholic hepatitis. As expected, this opened the floodgates. Every liver transplant program in the USA is now under pressure to list and transplant patients with alcoholic liver disease (ALD), resulting n a shift in the type of patients to admit and list for OLT. In consultation with Dr. Norman Gitlin, Dr. Norman Sussman and Dr. Michael Lucey have put together a collection of articles on current practices and future trends in the management of alcohol-related diseases. Expert authors from top institutions have contributed articles on the following topcs: Histopathology; Alcohol and the Law; Alcoholic Liver Disease in Children; Alcohol Use Disorder; Pathogenesis of ALD; Acute Alcoholic Hepatitis; Nutrition and Malnutrition in ALD; Alcoholic Cirrhosis; Liver Transplantation for Alcoholic Liver Disease; CNS effects of Alcohol; and Will Studies in NASH Help to Manage AS. Readers will come away with current clinical information to help them to make clinical decisions that will improve patient outcomes.

Book Description
A number of areas within liver transplant continue to evolve as the field matures. The advent of increasingly effective therapy for HCV will dramatically reduce the burden of recurrent disease within the next few years. HCC has become a well established indication for transplant with an increasing emphasis on adjuvant therapies to reduce the risk of tumor recurrence and potentially expand the acceptable limits of tumor burden amenable to liver transplant. Renal dysfunction is a frequent complication of decompensated liver disease and an important predictor of diminished post-transplant survival. Newer approached to therapy including terlipressin will reduce the impact of renal dysfunction in liver transplant candidates and potentially reduce the need for combined liver/kidney transplant. Increasing attention is being paid to role of comorbidities such as diabetes and hypertension on long-term recipient outcomes. Retransplantation remains a challenge with a variety of models available to predict outcomes. Cardiac disease pretransplant is an area of active investigation with newer entities such as cirrhotic cardiomyopathy a growing concern. These are some of many evolving issues in liver transplant which will be addressed to update our readers and which in turn will enhance the care of patients with liver disease.

Book Description
This was an important Symposium in a rapidly developing field of interest. It was designed to draw attention to areas which have been neglected in standard hepatology textbooks and to review areas of controversy. It was also meant to help bridge the communication gap between hepatologists'caring for children and adults as well as between some areas of clinical and basic research. The Symposium was a substantial success. Unfortunately two of the twenty participants did not deliver a manuscript. The result is a publication which is late and which is not as complete as it should be. For this lateness and incompleteness the editors apolo gize most sincerely--especially to those participants who delivered their manuscripts on time but even to those who delivered their manu scripts late. perhaps the most noteworthy feature of this publication is the fact that material presented in May 1980 is by no means out of date. Apart from the section on Viral Hepatitis, one of the most rapidly evolving fields of medicine, the context of the Symposium remains disturbingly current. The neglect continues, the controversies remain. We hope that this publication will help draw investigators into liver research, provide a useful point of reference forĀ· those in the field and stand as a monument to editors past, present and future, who have chased, are chasing and will chase manuscripts in vain.
