Not illustrated. 1912 edition. Excerpt: ...into existence. The evidences of the intermediate life must be sought, however, in other states. In Ohio it existed and disappeared with the soils of that time. The changes of level during the Tertiary period involved at its close an emergence of the great interior of the continent so that the land areas reached nearly the outlines which they have at present. The general slope of the surface must have been very different from that at present. The Ohio River did not exist at that time as a separate stream. Its present channel was occupied by a series of disconnected water courses, varying in size from small ravines to large rivers.' Many of the streams in West Virginia and in eastern Kentucky flowed northward across the state of Ohio, using the drainage channels now occupied by streams flowing in the opposite direction. Presumably they entered river channels now the site of the great lakes and the Wabash River. The great feature of the Tertiary vegetation was the presence of flowering plants.' Beech, sycamore, tupelo, oak, tulip tree, sweet gum, walnut, magnolia and others were represented by numerous species. A forest of great denseness existed, extending far north into the arctic regions. The coniferous vegetation was of the same general type all over the continent. The flora of Europe and America had much similarity. A temperate climate, very much warmer than now and somewhat subtropic, extended to the northern boundary of the United States, as is shown by the fossil plants about the arctic regions. An arctic bog flora must have existed north of this great forest in the polar lands. 'Tight, W. G., Professional Paper No. 13, U. S. Geol. Survey. Pcnhallow, D. P., Notes on tertiary plants. Trans.
