Book Description
In the fall of 1956, the world was on the brink of war. Egyptian President Gamel Nasser nationalized the Suez Canal, and Britain, France, and Israel attacked him. Russia supported Nasser, and Soviet Premier Khrushchev threatened nuclear holocaust if the United States became militarily involved. Soon, the matter became a major problem for the United Nations. Fortunately, because of the efforts of Lester Pearson, then Canada’s Minister of External Affairs, the crisis was defused. Pearson proposed a U.N. peacekeeping force be sent to Egypt to separate the warring factions there and keep the peace. Because his idea was adopted, Pearson helped save the world from war. For his outstanding statesmanship, Pearson won the Nobel Prize for Peace, the only Canadian ever to do so. This book, written to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the event, is about the Suez and about Pearson’s work during a tension-filled time in the twentieth century.

Book Description
“Pearson delivers a poignant debut that explores the faith of one African American family. . . . The writing is strong, and the story is engaging, and readers will be pleased to discover a new voice in Southern inspirational fiction.” —Booklist Christy Award winner! To hear Beatrice Agnew tell it, she entered the world with her mouth tightly shut. Just because she finds out she’s dying doesn’t mean she can’t keep it that way. If any of her children have questions about their daddy and the choices she made after he abandoned them, they’d best take it up with Jesus. There’s no room in Granny B’s house for regrets or hand-holding. Or so she thinks. Her granddaughter, Evelyn Lester, shows up on Beatrice’s doorstep anyway, burdened with her own secret baggage. Determined to help her Granny B mend fences with her far-flung brood, Evelyn turns her grandmother’s heart and home inside out. Evelyn’s meddling uncovers a tucked-away box of old letters, forcing the two women to wrestle with their past and present pain as they confront the truth Beatrice has worked a lifetime to hide.

Book Description
Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The North Korean economy has always been based on person-to-person market exchanges, but they have never been as prevalent or necessary as they are today. The state no longer provides for the people, so they must rely on capitalism to survive. #2 The North Korean economy was doing well in the 1950s, 1960s, and early 1970s. However, the economy began to decline in the mid-1970s due to mismanagement by Kim Il Sung and the end of Soviet aid. The PDS began to break down in the early 1990s. #3 The North Korean famine of 1994-1998 was the darkest period in the country’s history, and it paved the way for marketization. Today, women in North Korea are becoming more independent and ambitious than ever before. #4 The North Korean government has a difficult relationship with its citizens’ economic liberalization. While there are reform-minded officials in the government, there is also a natural fear of change at the top.
