PAYTON/PEYTON Descendants from Northeast Georgia IV book fourth edition with its genealogical charts and source information in chronological order has been updated and revised as of 6 March 2019. This book is a documentation of William Payton, Junior and his sons, Cornelius, Leroy, William III, Gabriel, Moses and George and their descendants that left Amherst County, Virginia for northeast Georgia after the Revolutionary War in 1784 where land was free. The Revolutionary War left the people in Virginia penniless and restless in spirit. The Virginians had made great sacrifices to secure their country's independence. The Payton's started out poor, like so many of their fellow constituents at that time. William Payton, Jr. and family were first in Washington & Wilkes Counties before they settled on 300 acres of third quality land in Madison County before moving on. The Payton's hunted and fished for a living, while two sons of Cornelius; Richard & Isaac Newton were carpenters that probably built houses or made furniture. The Payton's had no slaves, very few farm animals, probably a one room log cabin, no schools so they couldn't read or write. They also had to contend with the Cherokee Indians and put up with other hardships as pioneers.In this edition, you will find a total of 4,415 Payton/Peyton descendants, 11 generations, 1,500 marriages, 976 different surnames, 254 obituaries, 96 photos/images, numerous short stories and transcribed newspaper articles throughout the book. This updated edition provides the most current known information with 108 type pages from an update file, 615 additional family members, 187 additional families and twice as many obituaries and photos since the second edition was printed. Herein, it has been factually conjectured that William Payton, Junior migrated south in 1784 to Northeast Georgia after the Revolutionary War ended. In fact, this book contains breakthrough information and/or references sources not before seen or noted before about William, Cornelius and Leroy Payton.William Payton, Sr. and his descendants are listed in "The Peytons of Virginia II" (POVII) book based on the Larry Payton's submission of over 2,000 Northeast Georgia Paytons to the Peytons of Virginia Society (PSV) in 2004. Prior to the author's submission in 2004, the PSV did not have any Northeast Paytons in their database. This book provides the most current Payton family information with numerous updates since 2004, additional family members and source information that was not included in the POVII book. You will find 11 generations of Northeast Paytons, 1,310 families, 870 different Surnames and 3,798 individuals with the large majority of them being direct descendants of William Payton, Jr. The Paytons/Peytons started out in Northeast Georgia poor like so many of their fellow constituents during that time. William Payton and his sons settled on 300 acres of third quality land, which was not conducive to farming at all. At the turn of the early twentieth century, Harlem—the iconic Black neighborhood—was predominantly white. The Black real estate entrepreneur Philip Payton played a central role in Harlem’s transformation. He founded the Afro-American Realty Company in 1903, vowing to vanquish housing discrimination. Yet this ambitious mission faltered as Payton faced the constraints of white capitalist power structures. In this biography, Kevin McGruder explores Payton’s career and its implications for the history of residential segregation. Payton stood up for the right of Black people to live in Harlem in the face of vocal white resistance. Through skillful use of print media, he branded Harlem as a Black community and attracted interest from those interested in racial uplift. Yet while Payton “opened” Harlem streets, his business model depended on continued racial segregation. Like white real estate investors, he benefited from the lack of housing options available to desperate Black tenants by charging higher rents. Payton developed a specialty in renting all-Black buildings, rather than the integrated buildings he had once envisioned, and his personal successes ultimately entrenched Manhattan’s racial boundaries. McGruder highlights what Payton’s story shows about the limits of seeking advancement through enterprise in a capitalist system deeply implicated in racial inequality. At a time when understanding the roots of residential segregation has become increasingly urgent, this biography sheds new light on the man and the forces that shaped Harlem.

The brothers were seated at Stony Hill, their plantation along Aquia Creek, in what is now Stafford County. Included is an ancient PEYTON pedigree beginning with Robert PEYTON (circa 1640-1694) of Gloucester, Virginia and continuing back twenty-nine generations to the Vikings. The book details the PEYTON line from Henry PEYTON, circa 1560, to Martha Ann Elizabeth PEYTON (1844-1927). No living people are included, however there are charts where one may include a personal family lineage. It is indexed.
