Book Description
Cancer continues to be a growing problem as it is the foremost cause of death worldwide, killing millions of people each year. The number of people battling cancer continues to increase, owing to different reasons, such as lifestyle choices. Clinically, determining the cause of cancer is very challenging and often inaccurate. Incorporating efficient and accurate algorithms to detect cancer cases is becoming increasingly beneficial for scientists in computer science and healthcare, as well as a long-term benefit for doctors, patients, clinic practitioners, and more. Specifically, an automation of computation in machine learning could be a solution in the next generation of big data science technology. Machine Learning in Cancer Research With Applications in Colon Cancer and Big Data Analysis presents algorithms that have been developed to evaluate big data approaches and cancer research. The chapters include artificial intelligence and machine learning approaches, as well as case studies to solve the predictive issues in colon cancer research. This book includes concepts and techniques used to run tasks in an automated manner with the intent to improve better accuracy in comparison with previous studies and methods. This book also covers the processes of research design, development, and outcome analytics in this field. Doctors, IT consultants, IT specialists, medical software professionals, data scientists, researchers, computer scientists, healthcare practitioners, academicians, and students can benefit from this critical resource.

The First Decade of Living with the Global Crisis
Author: Anastasios Karasavvoglou
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319242679
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 197
Book Description
This volume sheds new light on economic developments in several countries of Southeast Europe. The European Union and especially the eurozone continue to experience rhythms of fiscal crisis, as can most clearly be seen in the debt crisis in the South Periphery. Despite the fact that several measures and decisions have been taken to deal with the crisis (banking union, liquidity support from the European Central Bank), proposals to reform Europe’s strategic policy in order to find a way out of the crisis have been put forward. This book explores the respective roles that specific sectors, e.g. the agricultural sector, social capital, tax policies and labour immigration, can play in this regard. The importance of international economic relations (exports, imports, FDI, exchange rates) is analysed, in order to illustrate the nature of the economic developments and the major economic difficulties these countries face.

Edible Food Packaging with Natural Hydrocolloids and Active Agents
Author: Ahmet Yemenicioğlu
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1000788032
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 346
Book Description
The aim of this book is to show the potential of natural hydrocolloids and active agents to develop sustainable edible packaging materials for food preservation. For this, the current and future sources of natural hydrocolloids have been reviewed along with their extraction methods, impact on health and ability to form different packaging such as film, casing, coating, mat, pad, etc. Similarly, natural active compounds were evaluated carefully considering their sources, extraction methods, regulatory status, and compatibility with edible packaging. The book emphasizes the recent developments in methods, strategies and technologies employed to enhance the performance of antimicrobial, antioxidant and bioactive packaging. The basic testing methods used to evaluate antimicrobial and antioxidant activity of edible packaging in model media and food were discussed, and carefully selected example active edible packaging applications for different food categories were provided with critical details such as the thin balance between effectiveness of packaging and sensory properties of food. As such, it helps in understanding necessary parameters in designing an effective active edible packaging that is applicable to the target food category. Moreover, readers are primed for the first time on how to develop a fully natural antimicrobial, antioxidant or bioactive edible food packaging. This book is different from most of the similar books' avail as it provides neither methodologies about classical active packaging based on chemicals and fossil polymeric films nor is it a thorough collection of different food packaging applications. It is also not a book that concentrates on physicochemical characterization methods and engineering aspects of packaging. Instead, this is a book that provides systematic knowledge about key methods of evaluating natural resources, agro-industrial wastes and by-products for development of edible packaging, and concentrates on concepts, strategies, technologies, and applications of active edible packaging based solely on natural components. It is designed to share both positive and negative experiences in an emerging field that is expected to play a central role in improving food safety and quality, human health and environmentally friendly practices.

Nanoscience in Food and Agriculture 1
Author: Shivendu Ranjan
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319393030
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 341
Book Description
Nanotechnology is a fast-evolving discipline that already produces outstanding basic knowledge and industrial applications for the benefit of society. Whereas the first applications of nanotechnology have been developed mainly in material sciences, applications in the agriculture and food sectors are still emerging. Due to a rapid population growth there is a need to produce food and beverages in a more efficient, safe and sustainable way. Here, nanotechnology is a promising way to improve crop production, water quality, nutrition, packaging, and food security. There are actually few comprehensive reviews and clear textbooks on nanotechnology in agriculture, water, and food. In this book there are 10 chapters describing the synthesis and application of nanomaterials for health, food, and agriculture are presented. Nanomaterials with unique properties will dramatically improve agriculture and food production. Applications will include nanofertilisers to enhance plant growth and nanosensors to detect food contamination. An overall view of nanotechnology applications in agriculture, food, water, and environment are described in the first two chapters by Dasgupta et al. and Singh. Health and environmental applications of nanotechnology are presented in chapters 3-5. Shukla and Iravani review green methods to synthesize metal nanoparticles, and give applications to water purification, in chapter 3. The removal of up to 95% of contaminants by nanoparticles, nanotubes and nanostructured membranes is described by Naghdi et al. in chapter 4. Yoti et al. then review nanosensors for the detection of pathogenic bacteria in chapter 5. Those nanosensors can be used as biodiagnostics to control food and water quality. Food applications of nanoscience are presented in chapters 6 and 7 by Kuswandi and Sarkhar et al. Kuswandi explain in chapter 6 that nanomaterials can improve packaging quality and that nanosensors can detect freshness and contanimants. The use of nanoparticles to protect ingredients such as vitamins, flavours, and antimicrobials is reviewed by Sarkhar et al. in chapter 7.
