Excerpt from Insects Affecting Vegetables Ame. These insects are often suspected injuring the plants over which they are seen running, but as a rule they are only indirectly responsible. A few species, such as the large black Carpenter Ants. Form their galleries in trunks of trees, posts and timber and do a con siderable amount of damage, but the great variety of smaller species which infest our gardens do not feed upon foliage or injure growing plants. Sometimes they may be found upon unopened flower buds, but they are only attracted by some sweet secretions on the surface; as a rule their presence indicates that there is a colony of Aphids near by, which they take under their protection in order to obtain from them the sweet honey-dew exuded by these minute creatures. The worst injury for which ants are responsible is the establishmnt of colonies of Aphids upon the roots of many plants; the ants collect the eggs and take care of them during the winter and when growth is sufficiently advanced carry them to the roots and look after them during the summer, in order to have a constant supply of honey dew. These colonies increase rapidly and soon check the growth of the plant and ultimately destroy it. Where ants' nests abound, frequent digging and stirring of the soil, and in field cultivation repeated disking and harrowing, will get rid of many, or they may be treated with carbon bisulphide; a small quantity should be poured into the entrance of the nest or into a hole made with a stick and quickly covered with earth: the fumes will speed ily kill all the inmates. It is best to perform the Operation towards even ing when all the ants are within the nest This is a very effective mode of getting rid of the large colonies which make mounds of rubbish on lawns and in fields. Excerpt from Some Insects Injurious to Vegetable Crops: A Series of Articles Dealing With Insects of This Class The various species of noxious insects discussed have, with few exceptions, been destructive during the years 1900 and 1901, but a few came under observation at an earlier date. The work is therefore, to a certain extent, a report on the principal insects which have been injurious and whose ravages have been brought to the attention of this office as affecting the vegetable crops of the country during the past two years. Circumstances beyond the writer's control have pre vented the publication of this matter until the present time. The initial article treats of the potato stalk weevil, which has been very injurious for a number of years but has never received extensive notice in any of the publications of this Department; hence, all avail able facts concerning it, together with an original illustration, have been brought together. The Northern leaf-footed plant-bug attracted more attention during the last two years than ever before in its his tory, and its abundance in the Vicinity of the District of Columbia enabled a study of its habits and the practical completion of a knowl edge of its life history, the results of which are here given. No. 4, n. Issued by this Division, and a Farmers' Bulletin recently published by the Department, making a total of eleven titles of publications having a bearing on this subject. The completion Of a more comprehensive bulletin is necessarily Of so slow accomplishment that it has been thought desirable to bring together for publication a portion Of the accumulated information on some Of the more interesting new or little-known species. This matter Is presented in the following ten articles, prepared in a somewhat more popular or less technical style than will be pursued in the more exhaustive work planned. A section is devoted to a discussion Of spraying and dusting equipment. Most insecticides will become scarce as stocks are depleted and re placement becomes difficult. It is not only thrifty, but patriotic as well, to use them carefully. Careful application of minimum amounts will do a better job than careless use Of large quantities. The aim should be to mix the material thoroughly and apply it as a light, even coating to the parts of the plant affected by the insect. Applying the material to the parts affected saves material and insures effective control of the pest.
