Book Description
The authors guide us through every corner of this fascinating region, where they have spent much of their time over many years. GaudiOCOs Sagrada Familia in Barcelona is one of the most unusual churches in the world, with its melting sand-castle appearance and odd bubble-shaped spires. Catalonia''s Costa Brava provides stunning views as the Mediterranean waves clash with the jagged coastline. The stretch of small resort cities along the Costa Brava, which means the Rugged Coast, feels like a world caressed by the heavens. Stand above the rocks and look down to the sweeping coastline, the sea stretching endlessly. Relax at a seaside bar, sipping cocktails. Hike the trails leading from the shore to the hills above. Unlike the tourist-swarmed French Riviera, the Costa Brava is intimate. It''s like discovering a well-guarded secret. There are several busy resort cities, but there are also many quiet and isolated beaches. Some of the prime beach cities include Roses, L''Escala and Blanes. Mountain-climbing destinations, ski resorts, spa villages, Gallo-Roman ruins and prehistoric cave paintings are abundant in the region. Catelonia is marked by breathtaking cliffs, expanses of beaches and the thriving, hip seaside city of Barcelona. In the Navarre region, men taunt large, dangerous animals for PamplonaOCOs annual Running of the Bulls. Andorra is its own little world, and not just because it''s a 290-square-mile independent principality (a fifth the size of Rhode Island). Nestled atop some of the highest peaks of the Pyrenees, the principality is filled with amazing architecture, surreal panoramic views and some of Europe''s finest skeeng resorts. Andorra attracts tourists for its duty-free shopping alone. Because many visitors are French and Spanish residents seeking bargains, there is a very authentic European flair to a vacation here on the one hand. On the other hand, the shopping deals can lend the principality''s capital, Andorra la Vella, an unfortunate bargain-basement ambiance. Catalan is the national language, but French and Spanish are widely spoken. This is an ideal destination for lovers of both the city and the great outdoors. Quite possibly one of the globe''s best adventure travel destinations, the capital city itself is also an urban oasis perched at an altitude of 3,300 feet."

Book Description
Ernest Hemingway casts a very long shadow – especially the one thrown over Ray Knight by the Bahamian sunset on Hemingway's beloved islands of Bimini. Using the late literary giant's terse aphorisms and mordant quips as springboards for his own lean and drum-tight prose, Ray Knight invites us to join him on a journey from Pamplona to Bimini, in the footsteps of his literary hero. This collection of short stories, anecdotes and excerpts from the author's novels runs the gamut of emotions, from pathos and tragedy to humor and unabashed sentimentality – from a moving and thought-provoking look at the ethical ramifications of euthanasia to a boxing tale that pulls no punches, and without which no homage to Hemingway would be complete. Whether you add an extra kick to your coffee break one tale at a time or settle down with a glass of rum and spend an evening 'In The Footsteps of Hemingway', you're in for an enjoyable and edifying read – and a great introduction to the author's full-length works. The Vet's Dilemma:- A personal look at one man's anguished choice between humanity and morality. What will he do? What would you do? The Tears of a Clown:- A clown's antics bring joy to thousands of children but behind the make-up is a face racked with pain. Monty:- A man's relationship with his car confounds his daughter and leads to a traumatic and deadly conclusion.. Shadows :- A man struggles for survival in a harsh and dangerous environment. Voices from his past come to haunt him. Will they save or condemn him? It Tolls for Thee:- A washed-up boxer is offered one last, desperate shot at the big time – will he risk his life for one final chance of glory? Right of Passage:- A young hunter faces the ultimate test – will he become a legend or just a memory? A sample chapter from 'The Mountain'... Felicia's Cabin:- A kidnapped woman faces up to her captors in this sample chapter from' The Hatcher File'... Walking With the Bulls:- The author recalls his experience in Pamplona in 1977 – a year of tragic events at the Festival of San Fermin Every Job in Town:- An amusing recollection of the author's time in Sydney during 1980, when Australia was a land full of opportunities for a young man... either to get rich or get into a lot trouble!

Book Description
A story about anger, aggression and the desire for intimacy by a rising star of modern Dutch literature. A professional boxer and a family man meet by chance on a journey to the Pamplona Bull Run. The boxer is fleeing an unhappy love. The father hopes to escape his dull routine. Both know that, eventually, they will have to return to the place each calls 'home'. Why Peirene chose to publish this book: 'I adore the deceptive simplicity of this story. On the surface, the fast moving plot, the short sentences, the ordinary words make the text as straightforward as punches in a boxing match. But just as physical conflict stirs deep emotions, so too does this book as it focuses on a single question: how do you choose between flight and fight?' Meike Ziervogel 'An impressive work.' Harry Ritchie, Daily Mail 'As he tracks back and forth between the dual narratives, moving inexorably to the double climax, Van Mersbergen skilfully builds emotional intensity until the point when the boxer and bulls' fury are finally unleashed.' Lucy Popescu, Independent on Sunday 'An intriguing and intricate gem of a novel . . . Van Mersbergen's tightly controlled prose skilfully conveys the overriding sense of repressed emotion and sheer physicality that drive a compelling and complex story.' Pam Norfolk, Lancashire Evening Post 'Flawlessly translated.' Adrian Turpin, Financial Times 'A refreshing change from the byzantine complexities of all too many contemporary novels.' John Oakley, New Books Magazine 'An intense reading experience . . . Van Mersbergen tells what needs to be told and not a word more.' De Morgen

Book Description
Bacchanalia, A Pamplona Story is a novel that takes place during the Fiesta de San Fermin. It follows the activities of a group of expatriates as they live the nine day festival to its fullest, running with the bulls in the morning, watching the bullfights in the afternoon and in between drinking, partying, feasting, flirting and making love like there was no tomorrow. The characters are of different nationalities and backgrounds and each of them finds something unique in Pamplona. Frank is an Italian-American poet/house painter from Los Angeles, who keeps returning to the Fiesta year after year because the Fiesta first seduced him and then saved him from himself. Hector is Frank's best friend. He is a Mexican-American novelist from San Diego and an ex-Golden Gloves boxing contender who never went pro on account of his bipolar condition. He runs with the Spanish fighting bulls every morning because he is a Shaman (or a man of knowledge) and the bulls are for him a source of spiritual strength and enlightenment. Peter, another friend of Frank's, couldn't be more different from Hector. He is an ex-Navy Seal who was wounded in Afghanistan and who has discovered that running with the bulls helps him control his post-traumatic stress disorder. Clive is an upper class Englishman who flew with the Royal Air Force as a fighter pilot before he gave it up and moved to Spain to become a bullfighter. Ian is a hipster Scotsman with long blond hair and a beard braided with beads who sells derivatives in the City of London. He has a very un-politically correct, ribald sense of humor, which he uses as a way of breaking the ice with anyone he encounters. All of these men in turn are attracted to Irina, a young, stunningly beautiful, twenty-something, Russian temptress from St. Petersburg. She is visiting Pamplona and its Fiesta for the first time and everyone wants to have her. Everyone wants to be her boyfriend, to take her to bed or just to buy her a drink, but she is the one who decides, not the men. But perhaps the most important character in the novel is the Fiesta itself with its traditions and mysteries, its vitality and tragedy, its joy and almost bipolar duality between the spiritual and the pagan. It is an event that is forever changing and continually renewed by the millions of visitors who have embraced it and will embrace it in the years to come. It is the Bacchanalia, one of the few places left in the modern world where a man can take a chance and risk everything for love or a fleeting run with the bulls.
