Excerpt from Forestry Pamphlets, Nevada Moisture laden winds from the Pacific Ocean deposit their rain and snow upon the long western slopes of the Sierra Nevada mountains and upon their summits. Immediately east of the mountains, the valleys, however rich the soil, are covered with sagebrush and appear like barren deserts except where some stream overflows its banks and creates natural meadows, or where the land has been cleared and irrigated. The geographical situation of the town of Reno is as follows It is located in latitude 39 deg, 30 min., longitude I 19 deg. 39 min. At an elevation of 4497 feet. It is in the western portion of the Truckee meadows near the foot-hills of the Sierra Nevada moun tains which rise abruptly west and southwest of the city. It is in the beginning of the sagebrush desert country which extends east of Reno to Utah. The city is therefore located well within the rain-shadow of the Sierra.
