Book Description
- A collection of 100 final paintings from 100 deceased artists, with accompanying biographies and thought-provoking text- Features a diverse range of artists, from Bosch, Rubens, and Fragonard, to Hopper, Mondrian, and Kahlo- Generates a fascinating discussion about the relationship between art and deathThere are no rules, and even less justice. Death takes everyone without discrimination. Sometimes it is accidental - like Signorelli, who fell from scaffolding. Sometimes it is expected, as with the diabetic Cezanne, who wrote "I am old, sick, and I swore to die while painting". But often, researching a painter's death is an easier task than determining which of their works is truly their 'last'. Paintings tend to be dated by year and not month, inciting much debate among art historians. This book embraces this ambiguity, studying 100 examples of works that lay completed for several years, or were left unfinished on the easel, or were finished post-mortem by a friend's grieving hand. The Last Painting collects 100 terminal paintings from 100 artists, including Dalí, Manet, Toulouse-Lautrec, Degas, Goya, Pollock, Rembrandt, Dix, Bonnard, Titien, and many more. Each picture gives us a glimpse into the painter's mind. Did they know death was coming? Did they paint with denial, or acceptance? Did they return to a favorite subject, or decide to embark on a new, original project while they still had time? A poetic and thought-provoking book, The Last Painting is a sensitive exploration of the relationship between art and death.

Book Description
The work aims at bringing the Persian texts into the study of the arts and technology of the Indo-lranian world – an approach much neglected so far. Drawing upon Persian sources (both from Iran and India), viz., technical treatises, historical chronicles and poetical texts, the work deals with painting and the art of book making during twelfth to nineteenth century. The introduction presents the geographical and chronological dimensions of the study. After a brief history of Persian painting before the twelfth century, the book discusses mural painting, manuscripts, origin of paper and its fabrication, the composition of the page, colours/pigments used in the paintings, painting subjects, bookbinding, etc. The painter, man and artist, his origin, his training, his status, aesthetics and taste, his workshop and its organisation and distribution of tasks therein, modular construction of the manuscripts, library, the caligraphy surrounding the painting, its illuminations and binding are all analysed. In fact the book reconstructs the entire process of making an illustrated manuscript from its ground work to its binding. Persian text and illustrations enhance the utility of the work.

Book Description
Excerpt from The World's Painters and Their Pictures The present universal interest in the subject of historic art and the indications that very soon it will hold equal importance in our school curriculums with those of general history and literature, are sufficient excuse for the making of a new book which treats of the world's painters and paintings. It is hoped that the volume will be of especial usefulness to young students of the subject, to whom it has been carefully adapted, as well as to the general reader. In it reference will be found to painters of greatest note in the history of art, a careful analysis of the characteristics of their work, and abundant and well-arranged information concerning their most noted pictures, - all in accordance with the decisions of the latest and most authoritative criticism. This latter feature will be found of unusual service to those who are preparing to visit the picture galleries of the Old World. The significance of colors as used by the old masters and the emblems by which saints and other sacred personages, when found in an old picture, may be readily recognized, as well as the pronouncing vocabulary of artists' names, are useful features of the book. It also contains a list of pictures which have grown familiar to the public through reproduction, together with names of their painters and the places where they are to be found. Book Description
Excerpt from Essays in Fresco Leonardo defines the two chief objects of the painter's art to be to depict first man and then the intention of his soul; the former he characterised as easy, the latter as hard and this latter was too complex to admit of interpretation by a process so summary as that of painting in fresco. Leonardo himself employed other methods in his two great mural paintings, with sequel of disaster in loss of power to withstand the ravages of time. Readers discover this incredible artist through his biography and full-color examples of his paintings, including The Card Players. Tiny details are revealed through palette samples and close-up images of small parts of his work, like the signature at the bottom of The House of the Hanged Man.
