Backwaters of Development
Author: Shovan Ray
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
ISBN: 9780198065630
Category : Community development
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
The varying features of growth and change in different states in India are often emphasized in the development discourse. Backwaters of Development analyses issues of economic performance and aspects of human development in select backward states: Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Orissa. Using a few states like Kerala as benchmark and others such as Punjab, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal for comparison, the volume raises larger questions about the determinants of various indicators of development and change. The essays examine identity-based issues such as the development of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, gender gaps, ruralurban distinctions, and differences that exist between regions and parts of a state, or even the whole state as a region. The volume shows how group identities account for a large proportion in the sum total of backwardness attributes, and how past actions and interventions help understand the existence of deprivation and prosperity among different groups.

Inclusive Development in South Asia
Author: Toshie Awaya
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1000807789
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 363
Book Description
This book examines the multi-layered aspects and the complexities of inclusive development in South Asia based on recent data and using innovative methodology. The book offers an analysis of the existing ground realities in terms of economic and inclusive development, presenting relevant discussion and findings. It discusses lower castes, tribes, religious/ethnic minorities, and other socially vulnerable people, as well as gender, rural–urban, and educational disparities in South Asia, and highlights that all these issues are interrelated. Structured in two parts—Spatial Dimensions, Labour, and Migration, and Social Dimensions and Beyond Inclusion—the chapters present emerging new concepts related to socio-economic and inclusive development and use effective and valid methods and methodology covering the ground realities-based information and secondary data-based analysis. Evaluating the extent to which inclusive development has been realised in South Asia, the contributors explore a new approach towards the concept of ‘inclusiveness’ by drawing on the experiences of the diverse societies in South Asia. An immensely useful contribution to the analysis of different economic and social issues in different countries in South Asia, focusing on inclusivity, this book will be of interest to researchers working on South Asian Politics and Development Economics.

Interdisciplinary approaches to literacy and development
Author: Kaushik Basu
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317990668
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 213
Book Description
The links between literacy and development have been the focus of research conducted by both economists and anthropologists. Yet researchers from these different disciplines have tended to work in isolation from each other. This book aims to create a space for new interdisciplinary debate in this area, through bringing together contributions on literacy and development from the fields of education, literacy studies, anthropology and economics. The book extends our theoretical understanding on the ways in which people’s acquisition and uses of literacy influence changes in agency, identity, social practice and labour market and other outcomes. The chapters discuss data from diverse cultural contexts (South Africa, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Peru, and Mexico), and from contrasting research paradigms. The contributors examine the significance of culture and socio-economic contexts in shaping such processes. As such, they contribute to our understanding of the role of literacy in processes of poverty reduction, and its importance to people’s capabilities and wellbeing. The themes covered include: the dynamics of literacy use in the production of agency, the enactment, negotiation and embodiment of new social identities - including gendered and religious identities; the impacts of literate identities and use on institutional relations and social participation; the dynamics of literacy ‘sharing’ and their externalities within and beyond households; formal analysis of the impacts of proximate illiteracy on labour market and health outcomes across men and women and social contexts. This book was published as a special issue of the Journal of Development Studies.
