Book Description
Excerpt from The Garden Without Walls Most of the facts which lie outside my own recollection were communicated to me by my grandmother. She never got over her amazement at her Son's audacity. It was without parallel in her experience until I attempted to repeat his performance with an entirely individual varia tion. She never tired of rehearsing the details; it was noticeable that She always referred to my mother as Miss Fannie. Book Description
Excerpt from Howrah The deep channel alternates from left to right and vice cersa according to the windings of the river, except where deflected by the large tributaries which debouch into it at the southern limit of this district. Proceeding from Howrah Bridge, the deep channel runs on the Calcutta side in the Calcutta Reach past the Fort and Kidderpore to Garden Reach. At Rajganj, Opposite Hangman Point, it crosses over to the Howrah Side, and follows the Sankrail Reach as far as Melancholy (menikhali) Point. It then zigzags from left to right at each bend. Book Description
Excerpt from My Summer in a Garden Inness (the best American painter Of Nature in her moods of real human feeling) once said, NO man can do anything in art, unless he has intuitions; but, between whiles, one must work hard in collecting the materials out of which intuitions are made. The truth could not be bit off better. Knowledge is the soil, and intui tions are the flowers which grow up out of it. The soil must be well enriched and worked. It is very plain, or will be to those who read these papers, now gathered up into this book, as into a chariot for a race, that the author has long employed his eyes, his ears, and his under standing, in Observing and considering the facts Of Nature, and in weaving curious analogies. Book Description
Excerpt from The Garden at the Winkle Woods in the Wilderness We pulled the nose of the Peter Pan on the beach of Peaceful Bay, whose shore has the outline of a scimitar curving its back against the neglected flower garden where old mother Winkle once trained nasturtiums to creep over the bank andlook at their blushing faces in the water at sundown. Book Description
Excerpt from A Child's Garden of Verses And I should like so much to play, To have to go to bed by day 1' To have to go to bed when the hills beyond Ettrick were purple against the silver light of a summer evening had but one compensating advantage. There were no shadowy passages to tread on the darksome way, and there was no fear, as in winter darkness, of. Seeing a spectre who, as spectres will, brought his own light with him. Book Description
Excerpt from Garden Walks With the Poets Whatever may seem capricious in the selection is therefore to be ascribed to redundance and excellence of material. I should have been glad to make my book hold twice as many poems, and have left out not a few favorites, sorely against my will. The plan required that variety of topics and treatment should be a leading object, and this excluded some of the most charming flower-poetry. Then, again, some pieces of that kind had, from their very excellence, already found their way into every school reading-book, and it seemed superfluous to reprint them here. And more than all, the quantity of verses which I had supposed could be contained in a good-sized volume, proved so much beyond the capacity of any volume of tolerable proportions, that a great mass of dearly beloved poems were absolutely crowded out pell-mell; thus disturbing considerably the regular ar rangement at first contemplated. I think, however, there will be found something for all tastes, as well as for all seasons and I sincerely desire that my readers may enjoy Garden Walks with the Poets as much as I have.
