Book Description
The long environmental nightmare had ended. Planet Earth had been healed. Its beauty and majesty had been restored by a race of evolving human descendants known as the Mirsiens. They had prevailed against those who would have used the knowledge and the power for themselves alone. Now, with the home world renewed, the time had come for the Mirsiens to reach for the stars. Taya G. Xallnyk is one of them. She seeks her place in the universe and the answers to all things unknown. She also commands the Outrunner vessel Oasis ValiMirum as it travels deep into the constellation of Orion. The vessel is a living, evolving entity in itself; a technological masterpiece in both form and function; a magnificent structure of almost unimaginable power. Others join the Mirsiens along the way. Together, they experience the frigid cold depths of space, the searing hot plains of Xolnon III, the conflicts with the Maljex, the mysterious spacial particle field, and the foreboding canyon on Zantauva. Their voyage is an incredible journey from one dimensional portal to the next as they travel through their wondrous and perilous galaxy.

Book Description
I am Sargon, Captain of the Antares, whom the prophet at my birth named the Even-Star of the House of the Descending Falcon, and the rising Morning Star of his people. What a confusing name to give to a small child. Now that I am at the end of my days, I think I can finally decipher the contradiction. I was heralded as the hope of the Astari, my people. The soothsayer told my great-grandfather, the last hope. This was the reason for the name Even-star. But, it was not to be. I'm also the last heir to the throne of Istranavu, my world. The assassination of the Emperor and my banishment was apparently the death-knell of my people. The Antares, my second home, will soon translate into the arms of Incal, the sun of my world. I have chosen death than have this ship used for their foul play, I will destroy the Antares. This is the end, the end of the joy and sorrows of a life I never in my wildest dreams could have envisioned. I was born two hundred years ago into the House of the Descending Falcon. My family was ancient even by the standards of my world. Both my parents were scientists. I think I inherited my inquisitiveness from them. Sirtis, my mother, was the granddaughter of the emperor which placed me high on the social and political ladder. When a civilization becomes ancient, it has the tendency to look back to a golden age. Everything hoary acquires a golden glow as Sabrina would have said. But there, I'm getting ahead of myself, so, I'd better start at the beginning.

Book Description
“A sweeping, smart, stunning story that dazzles brighter than a star system . . . a true gem to be treasured” from the author of Minecraft: The Dragon (Booklist, starred review). Earth is a distant memory. Habitable extrasolar planets are still out of reach. For generations, humanity has been clinging to survival by establishing colonies within enormous vacuum-breathing space beasts and mining their resources to the point of depletion. Rash, dreamy, and unconventional, Seske Kaleigh should be preparing for her future role as clan leader, but her people have just culled their latest beast, and she’s eager to find the cause of the violent tremors plaguing their new home. Defying social barriers, Seske teams up with her best friend, a beast worker, and ventures into restricted areas for answers to end the mounting fear and rumors. Instead, they discover grim truths about the price of life in the void. Then, Seske is unexpectedly thrust into the role of clan matriarch, responsible for thousands of lives in a harsh universe where a single mistake can be fatal. Her claim to the throne is challenged by a rival determined to overthrow her and take control—her intelligent, cunning, and confident sister. Seske may not be a born leader like her sister, yet her unorthodox outlook and incorruptible idealism may be what the clan needs to save themselves and their world. “Don’t be alarmed—that dizzy pleasurable sensation you’re experiencing is just your brain slowly exploding from all the wild magnificent worldbuilding in Nicky Drayden’s Escaping Exodus. I loved these characters and this story, and so will you.” —Sam J. Miller, Nebula-Award-winning author of Blackfish City

Book Description
"Followers of the Sport of Kings will find the book irresistible." -Publishers Weekly Jim Bolus's Kentucky Derby Stories was called "a Derby delight," "entertaining," and "a winner" by publications like Daily Racing Form, Lexington Herald-Leader, and the Detroit News. Now, Bolus, sportswriter and Derby historian, is back with another field of stories from the most-esteemed horse race in North America-Remembering the Derby. Included in this volume of his Derby moments are stories of trainers, runners, writers, winners, and losers. Bolus features chapters on his favorite race writers, Mike Barry and Joe Hirsch, who influenced his own craft and his love of the sport; and Bolus spends a few pages noting some of the best writers whose handicapping has paid off for many of their readers. This volume's cast of horses includes unforgettable legends like Northern Dancer and some less-memorable runners like Silky Sullivan, who deserves a second bow. Relying on his reportorial background, Bolus investigates the Derby with some enlightening offerings from the past. From the 1924 Derby, he recalls a controversial four-horse finish and how the true second-place finisher will never be known. Also in the list of stories is a compilation of tales from the saddle in which jockeys misgauged the distance to the finish-decisions that cost some the race and handed victory over to others. ABOUT THE AUTHOR The late Jim Bolus, who attended his thirty-seventh Kentucky Derby in 1996, hadn't missed the race in more than twenty years. Dubbed a Doctor of Derbyology by one newspaper reporter, Bolus also wrote Derby Dreams, Derby Fever, Kentucky Derby Stories, and Derby Magic, all published by Pelican.

Book Description
Why did the Greeks of the archaic and early Classical period join in choruses that sang and danced on public and private occasions? This book offers a wide-ranging exploration of representations of chorality in the poetry, art and material remains of early Greece in order to demonstrate the centrality of the activity in the social, religious and technological practices of individuals and communities. Moving from a consideration of choral archetypes, among them cauldrons, columns, Gorgons, ships and halcyons, the discussion then turns to an investigation of how participation in choral song and dance shaped communal experience and interacted with a variety of disparate spheres that include weaving, cataloguing, temple architecture and inscribing. The study ends with a treatment of the role of choral activity in generating epiphanies and allowing viewers and participants access to realms that typically lie beyond their perception.
