Book Description
Sky King was a TV show that began in the late 1950s. Do you know who flew the plane in the shows? How many different "Songbird" planes were there? What happened to the "missing episodes"? What did Kirby Grant do after the TV series ended? Did you know Kirby Grant was a singer and a concert violinist? Those of us of a certain age grew up with the Sky King television show. The old black and white TV shows inspired a lot of aviation careers, from pilots and flight instructors to airline pilots to NASA astronauts. The author had the personal pleasure of meeting and getting to know Kirby Grant and his wife after they retired to Central Florida in 1971. Shortly after his heart surgery in 1978, Kirby Grant spoke to me about the book he was "writing", taking the title "Out of the Blue" from the iconic opening of the television show. It was only much later after Kirby's passing in 1986 that I learned from his wife, Carolyn Grant, that the "book" had existed only in Kirby's mind and good intentions. This book is the long over due fulfillment of a promise to Carolyn Grant. Even if you are too young to remember the show, you will find this book an interesting journey into the early years of television history as you get to know one of its heroes.

The Brown Bean Coffee Shoppe serves as the setting for most of the adventures. The high ceilings, a signature of the 1940s architecture, are covered in intricate metal plates that glint softly under the warm lights of the heavy iron paddle fans. The air is filled with the rich aroma of freshly ground coffee beans, mingling with the sweet scent of baked goods from the counter, creating an irresistible invitation to linger. Georgiana Philips, a television news reporter for a local television channel, becomes involved in many of Samantha's adventures. She is in her early twenties and interned in Atlanta before accepting an outside reporter working the noon and afternoon news reports at the local channel. She often is her own camera operator, driving the news truck to news locations for live reports. Her goal is to become a studio news anchor. Detective Ronald Johnson is involved in several of Samantha's adventures. Detective Johnson, a seasoned veteran of the police force, has dedicated his life to law enforcement since graduating from the academy. Now in his late 40s, he is a hardened investigator with a face etched by years of relentless casework. Though open-minded about Samantha's paranormal abilities, he remains discreet, keeping his "secret resource" hidden from his superiors. Johnson maintains a professional, confidential relationship with Georgiana, frequently serving as her trusted source of information. Marge Miller, the coffee shop manager, plays a supporting role. Marge is the consummate organizer, tending to details, and not above cleaning tables. We come to know Marge as a woman in her late forties. She is fastidious and efficient. Marge has wavy shoulder-length auburn hair. David Dillon is a college student who works in the mornings and attends college classes in the afternoon. He is tall and athletic with blonde hair and blue eyes. He lives in an apartment above the coffee shop. Sandra Smith is a part-time afternoon worker. She is a single mother in her thirties supporting teen twins. Her dark hair is styled in a bun. The Brown Bean is one of her two jobs.

Book Description
Told in vivid graphic novel form by a groundbreaking Eisner-nominated comics creator, the long-overdue biography of the legend who co-created Captain America, Iron Man, Black Panther, the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, and many more superhero favorites. “A fast-paced celebration of an underheralded legend within the comic-book industry.”—Kirkus Reviews NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY LIBRARY JOURNAL This sweeping, full-color comic book biography tells the complete life story of Jack Kirby, co-creator of some of the most enduring superheroes and villains of the twentieth century for Marvel Comics, DC Comics, and more. Critically acclaimed graphic novelist Tom Scioli breathes visual life into Kirby's life story--from his days growing up in New York during the Great Depression and discovering a love for science fiction and cartoons to his time on the frontlines in the European theatre of World War II where he experienced the type of action and adventure he'd later imbue his comic pages with, and on to his world-changing collaborations at Marvel with Stan Lee, where the pair redefined comics as a part of pop culture. Just as every great superhero needs a villain to overcome, Kirby's story also includes his struggles to receive the recognition and compensation that he believed his work deserved. Scioli captures his moves from Marvel to DC and back again, showing how Kirby himself and later his family fought to preserve his artistic legacy. Drawn from an unparalleled imagination and a life as exciting as his comic book tales, Kirby's super-creations have influenced subsequent generations of creatives in the comics field and beyond. Now, readers can experience the life and times of a comics titan through the medium that made him famous.

Book Description
Three Americans in the Jim Crow South face enormous changed triggered by World War II in this epic novel by the Pulitzer-winning author of Freeman. Could you find the courage to do what’s right in a world on fire? An affluent white marine survives Pearl Harbor at the cost of a black messman’s life only to be sent, wracked with guilt, to the Pacific and taken prisoner by the Japanese. A young black woman, widowed by the same events at Pearl Harbor, finds unexpected opportunity and a dangerous friendship in a segregated Alabama shipyard feeding the war. Meanwhile, a black man, who as a child saw his parents brutally lynched, is conscripted to fight Nazis for a country he despises and discovers a new kind of patriotism in the all-black 761st Tank Battalion . . . Set against a backdrop of violent racial conflict on both the front lines and the home front, The Last Thing You Surrender explores the powerful moral struggles of individuals from a divided nation. What does it take to change someone’s mind about race? What does it take for a country and a people to move forward, transformed? Praise for The Last Thing You Surrender “A story of our nation at war, with itself as well as tyranny across the globe. It’s an American tapestry of hatred, compassion, fear, courage, and cruelties, leavened with the promise of triumph. A powerful story I will not soon forget.” —James R. Benn, author of the Billy Boyle WWII mysteries “Seamlessly integrates impressive research into a compelling tale of America at war—overseas, at home, and within ourselves, as we struggle to find the better angels of our nature. Pitts poignantly illustrates ongoing racial and class tensions, and offers hope that we can overcome hatred by refusing to sacrifice dignity.” —Booklist, starred review
