Excerpt from Mineral Resources of the United States, 1927, Vol. 2: Nonmetals The production of fuel briquets in 1927 was net tons' valued at according to reports courteously furnished by the operators of briquetting plants. In comparison with 1926, the production showed a decrease of tons, but in comparison with 1925, an increase of and with 1924, an increase of As demand in 1926 had been artificially stimulated by the anthracite strike, a decrease in 1927-was anticipated. That the sales of briquets declined only per cent below the level of the strike year at a time when anthracite was in abundant supply is an indication of the progress of the briquetting industry. In fact, production in the month of December, 1927, which amounted to tons, set a new monthly record, exceeding by tons the maximum monthly production of 1926. As shown by the following table, the decrease from 1926 was con fined to the Eastern States; on the Pacific coast and in the Central States production in 1927 showed an increase of about 9 per cent. Excerpt from Mineral Resources of the United States, 1921, Vol. 1: Metals Little net change in the quantity of coal in storage occurred during the year. On January 1, 1921, consumers' stocks were about tons. A steady decline during the first half of the year was offset by a rapid accumulation Of stocks in anticipation of the railroad workers' strike, and by December 31 stocks amounted to tons, or 41 days' supply at the rate of consumption then prevailing. The expected miners' strike, which began April 1, 1922, caused far-sighted consumers to increase their stocks still more during the first quarter of the new year. In sharp contrast to the bituminous - coal industry, the anthracite mines continued steadily at work through most Of 1921. The total output of freshly mined coal, from which the requirements of house holders are met, exceeded that Of 1920. The surplus in excess Of current requirements was stored by the producers. Not until late in November did the cumulative effect of the industrial depression and a mild winter force a lessening of activity in the anthracite region. Excerpt from California Mines and Minerals Compiled by chas. G. Yale, Statistician State Mining Bureau. HE mining interests oi_ the State of California are so diversified, and the industry is extended over so wide an area, that it is difficult to describe the conditions which exist without using many pages of printed matter. For this reason it has been considered proper, in this pamphlet, to give merely a record of results, which will show in plain figures what is being accomplished by the miners of the State. This record shows that some forty-four mineral substances are being exploited, the annual valuation of which is now and increasing at the rate of about yearly, as capital is invested and more mines are opened. The older mines, too, having been well developed and equipped, are increasing their annual output, and thus also proving their permanency and value with depth. The climatic conditions are favorable to mining operations throughout the State, and means of transportation have been so improved as to greatly lessen costs of supplies, etc. There are abundant opportunities for the safe and profitable investment of capital in the various branches of the industry, as numerous claims which have been located have never been properly developed or equipped, their owners lacking the necessary means.
