Book Description
Excerpt from Colonial Mansions of Maryland and Delaware Some people collect old furniture, some old books. I for many years have been a collector of old houses within easy travelling distance of my home in Balti more, and the best of my finds are to be found in this book. He who would collect old houses must possess much enthusiasm, a determination that will not be dis couraged, and a fine power of walking. Fully one-half of the points that he visits because of hearsay will be found to be without interest, and of the others that he seeks out only a few insignificant facts will at first be ascertainable. A continual source of surprise to one who searches for colonial homes is how little is known about them even in the immediate neighborhood in which they have stood for so many years. Book Description
Excerpt from Colonial Homes in North Carolina Architecture of the final years of the colonial period will be mentioned only lightly. During this later time new ideas of elegance came into North Carolina architecture, as in the well known Tryon Palace, to which we will refer later. For many people who have not thought very much about colonial architecture, these elegant later buildings, and also those of the early Republic, stand somehow for all or the best of colonial architecture, and the exciting architecture of an earlier, bustling, genuinely colonial period is not recognized. It will be useful in this booklet, therefore, to focus on the architecture of the earlier 18th century and see the simple, vigorous ideas of this period. Book Description
Excerpt from Old Colonial Houses in Maine: Built Prior to 1776 Many of the houses now popularly known as old colonial do not, however, fall within our period; for they were not erected until after the Revolution. The three decades from 1790 to 1820, during which peace and prosperity became assured in Maine, were rich in stately homes built on the best colonial models; and examples of these houses are now found in nearly all of our coast and river towns. Such houses, however, since they are not truly colonial, are necessarily excluded from our present consideration. Book Description
Excerpt from Colonial and Old Houses, of Greenwich, New Jersey The great interest in later years to everything pertaining to the early history of our country has been an incentive to write the history of the colonial and old houses of Greenwich. The old town having been the place of my nativity, and home for many years, it has been my privilege to cross the threshold of many of the ancient houses, some of them the homes of valued friends, from whom I have learned much of the past. I have prepared the following pages with much care, endeavoring to preserve some of the history of that portion of the past which pertains to the home of the early settler. From the early records of deeds and wills preserved in the archives of the state, and now accessible by their publication, I have found names and dates not otherwise obtainable. I also wish to acknowledge my indebtedness to the Vineland Historical and Antiquarian Society, for the use of its valuable library. It is hoped that these glimpses of days long gone, and the record of men and women who have made the old houses their dwelling place, may be of interest to the present generation, who should hold as a precious inheritance the memory of their ancestors, the early settlers of Greenwich. Book Description
Excerpt from Some Colonial Mansions and Those Who Lived in Them IN the following pages the plan pursued in the first volume of Some Colonial Homes and those who lived in them, has been closely followed, the only deviation being the introduction of homes of national fame, as Mount Vernon and Monticello. The great interest attaching to these is, perhaps, a sufficient apology for turning for a moment from the humbler to the greater folk, and for introducing, in one instance - that of Monticello - a resi dence finished only some years subsequent to that period at which all things Colonial are supposed to terminate. The reader, however, will find many examples of several periods of earlier architecture, and all such houses have a story worth the telling. There is, indeed, scarcely a house standing now, built during Colonial days, that is not, in one way or another intimately connected with some person, the actor in an important event in the history of our country.
