Book Description
In Yalda's universe, light has no universal speed and its creation generates energy. On Yalda's world, plants make food by emitting their own light into the dark night sky. As a child, Yalda witnesses one of a series of strange meteors, the Hurtlers, that are entering the planetary system at an immense, unprecedented speed. It becomes apparent that her world is in imminent danger — and the task of dealing with the Hurtlers will require knowledge and technology far beyond anything her civilization has yet achieved! Only one solution seems tenable: if a spacecraft can be sent on a journey at sufficiently high speed, its trip will last many generations for those on board, but it will return after just a few years have passed at home. The travelers will have a chance to discover the science their planet urgently needs, and bring it back in time to avert disaster.

The Adventures of Dofesaba Ii 2019 & 2020 from Port Leucate to Lagos in Portugal

Pages : 266
Book Description
This book is actually two books. Our adventures in 2019, where we came down the East coast of Spain, (The Punic Coast) followed by the next book based on our adventures the following year in 2020, which was as we all know was “The Covid year”. I decided to join them together after I found out that the 2020 book was a little light on content. While there were some exciting adventures, and “things” did happen, we only had eight weeks in which for them to happen, as opposed to the nearly sixteen weeks from the previous year. I did not feel that you the reader was getting a very good deal, and I did not want to spend effort padding the book out which a decent editor would have spotted and removed. So I didn’t. This is actually the second book of our adventures, there are several more to come, but to catch the spirit of Covid I thought that it would be wise to get this into the marketplace before everyone gets Vaccinated and forgets how disruptive to life and normalcy the virus was. Also, currently there is a lot in the media about the Orcas around Tarifa, as you will see we were slightly involved in that, if only as bystanders. The East coast of Spain is not as well visited as the Algarve by yacht based folk and I feel they are missing a lot. If this book inspires anyone to try the luck up that coast, well then job done.

An Adventure in Statistics
Author: Andy Field
Publisher: SAGE
ISBN: 1473943930
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 769
Book Description
Shortlisted for the British Psychological Society Book Award 2017 Shortlisted for the British Book Design and Production Awards 2016 Shortlisted for the Association of Learned & Professional Society Publishers Award for Innovation in Publishing 2016 An Adventure in Statistics: The Reality Enigma by best-selling author and award-winning teacher Andy Field offers a better way to learn statistics. It combines rock-solid statistics coverage with compelling visual story-telling to address the conceptual difficulties that students learning statistics for the first time often encounter in introductory courses - guiding students away from rote memorization and toward critical thinking and problem solving. Field masterfully weaves in a unique, action-packed story starring Zach, a character who thinks like a student, processing information, and the challenges of understanding it, in the same way a statistics novice would. Illustrated with stunning graphic novel-style art and featuring Socratic dialogue, the story captivates readers as it introduces them to concepts, eliminating potential statistics anxiety. The book assumes no previous statistics knowledge nor does it require the use of data analysis software. It covers the material you would expect for an introductory level statistics course that Field’s other books (Discovering Statistics Using IBM SPSS Statistics and Discovering Statistics Using R) only touch on, but with a contemporary twist, laying down strong foundations for understanding classical and Bayesian approaches to data analysis. In doing so, it provides an unrivalled launch pad to further study, research, and inquisitiveness about the real world, equipping students with the skills to succeed in their chosen degree and which they can go on to apply in the workplace. The Story and Main Characters The Reality Revolution In the City of Elpis, in the year 2100, there has been a reality revolution. Prior to the revolution, Elpis citizens were unable to see their flaws and limitations, believing themselves talented and special. This led to a self-absorbed society in which hard work and the collective good were undervalued and eroded. To combat this, Professor Milton Grey invented the reality prism, a hat that allowed its wearers to see themselves as they really were - flaws and all. Faced with the truth, Elpis citizens revolted and destroyed and banned all reality prisms. The Mysterious Disappearance Zach and Alice are born soon after all the prisms have been destroyed. Zach, a musician who doesn’t understand science, and Alice, a geneticist who is also a whiz at statistics, are in love. One night, after making a world-changing discovery, Alice suddenly disappears, leaving behind a song playing on a loop and a file with her research on it. Statistics to the Rescue! Sensing that she might be in danger, Zach follows the clues to find her, as he realizes that the key to discovering why Alice has vanished is in her research. Alas! He must learn statistics and apply what he learns in order to overcome a number of deadly challenges and find the love of his life. As Zach and his pocket watch, The Head, embark on their quest to find Alice, they meet Professor Milton Grey and Celia, battle zombies, cross a probability bridge, and encounter Jig:Saw, a mysterious corporation that might have something to do with Alice’s disappearance...

Category : Fiction

Pages : 1192
Book Description
HUGE SAVINGS OFF THE INDIVIDUAL BOOK PRICES! Includes the first 3 novels in the BLACK CARBON series: The Hunted, The Surface, The Tempest THE HUNTED Lights out. Keep still. Pray for morning. Joule and Cage Mazur feel like prisoners in their home. With something new stalking the streets at night, their family’s only protection is bolting the door and embracing the darkness. And even though they manage to trap and kill one of the monsters, their locks won’t hold forever… Dealing with rising panic and rage in the neighborhood, the free-spirited survivors hatch a plan to undermine the killers. But with the night hunters picking off everyone they can, Joule and Cage know time is ticking toward humanity’s extinction. Can they kill the Night Hunters and reclaim the top of the food chain? THE SURFACE No Power. No Food. No Rescue. When the rains came the first time and campus flooded, Cage thought it was a freak weather incident. Joule saw it for what it was—a warning. Life went back to normal when most of the water receded. But the standing puddles left behind weren’t normal. Something had laid eggs in it… The creatures from the San Fransisco Bay found a path into the floodwaters. As the rain comes harder the second time, the flood is much deeper and those who go underwater don’t come back up. The rip-currents are the least dangerous things in the water. Can Cage and Joule escape? How will they survive when even the land isn’t safe? And what about the ones they left behind? THE TEMPEST Find shelter. Stay low. Hold on tight. The first tornado was an anomaly. It cleared the land and bumped up the time scale on the job. But as everyone rushes to set up the new solar farm, they find that something has shifted… At first it was a series of small, unassuming whirlwinds, a nuisance more than a real concern. But soon the funnels get bigger and the winds get stronger, and there’s nowhere safe to hide. When Joule and Cage get separated, the winds get even more dangerous. They’ve always had each other’s backs, but now they’ll have to survive on their own. Can they even help the people who live in the path of the fury? Maybe, if they can save themselves first. These are the first three books in the fast-paced Black Carbon apocalyptic thriller series by a USA Today bestselling author. If you like resourceful heroes, world-ending catastrophes, and breathtaking action, you’ll love AJ Scudiere’s spine-tingling series, BLACK CARBON.

A Memoir of Love Science and Adventure- My life with Svante Wold
Author: Nouna Kettaneh
Publisher: Outskirts Press
ISBN: 1977267815
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 330
Book Description
This book is the story of my life with Svante Wold. Svante was a brilliant Swedish scientist who started the field of Chemometrics (how to extract information from large datasets.) We met at a conference in New Hampshire, when Chemometrics was in its infancy, and fell madly in love. Everything separated us. We lived in different countries, were from differing cultures, had established careers, and were in long-term relationships. But love and destiny won. We got married, lived together, worked together and were never apart. We founded a company and succeeded in growing and expanding the field of Chemometrics to what it is today: a forever young discipline, showing the capacity to adapt and solve new challenges in the Natural and Life Sciences. Simca, the software we started, has become the standard of Multivariate Analysis. Above all this book is a love story and a tribute to a wonderful and unique man.

The Eternal Flame
Author: Greg Egan
Publisher: Hachette UK
ISBN: 0575105747
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 448
Book Description
The generation ship Peerless is suffering from a population explosion, and the only way to reduce the number of children is by drastically limiting the females' food intake. So population control consists of two barbaric choices: starvation, or suicide. Trying to find a better way, a biologist starts experimenting with animals, and stumbles on a technique that radically alters the reproductive cycle. But while the advantages are obvious, there's a major drawback: while it spares women from their old role - reproduction without hope of survival - it will essentially wipe out an entire sex. Amid the turmoil created by this new possibility, physicists on the ship are working to develop the technology they will need to complete the mission of the Peerless. One of the expedition's founders dreamed of discovering the Eternal Flame: a way to generate thrust without consuming any fuel at all. The inhabitants on board the Peerless have some hard choices to make - and the wrong one could spell extinction for their entire race.
