The Making of the Jacobean Regime
Author: Diana Newton
Publisher: Boydell & Brewer Ltd
ISBN: 9780861932726
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 184
Book Description
A new look at the beginning of James VI and I's reign in England, arguing for a reappraisal of his capabilities as a monarch. The early years of the reign of James VI and I have been much examined, but this book takes a new approach, via an overall survey rather than focussing on what are traditionally perceived as the most important moments, such as theHampton Court Conference and the Gunpowder Plot. This enables the author to show how circumstances and events immediately after James' accession were crucial to shaping his approach to ruling England, and provides a fresh understanding of his reign in England. Unusually, the book draws on both English and Scottish sources, governmental and ecclesiastical, and makes extensive use of central and local records, in order to illustrate how the king managed the Elizabethan legacy he inherited by reference to his Scottish experience. The author argues that after initial misunderstandings, James proved himself to be a king of real political acumen, as he supervised foreign policy, finance, local government and religious policy in England whilst simultaneously ruling Scotland as an absentee monarch. DIANA NEWTON is Research Fellow at the University of Teeside.

Tudor Political Culture
Author: Dale Hoak
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9780521520140
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 356
Book Description
This book consists of twelve interdisciplinary essays on the ideas, images, and rituals of Tudor and early Stuart society. Through the exploitation of new manuscript material, or hitherto untapped artistic sources, the authors open up new perspectives on the ideas, institutions, and rituals of political society. The evidence of art and literature, and new techniques for the discovery of lost mentalities, are used to explore key aspects of Tudor political culture, including royal iconography, funereal symbolism, parliamentary elections, political vocabularies, kinship and family at court and in the country, and the architecture of urban authority. In his Introduction the editor uses the example of Henry VIII's historic break with Rome to suggest the seamless links between politics and political culture by presenting it against the backdrop of early-Tudor memories of Henry V, the cult of chivalry and the invasion of France (1513), and the pre-Reformation imagery of 'imperial' kingship.
