Book Description
Excerpt from The Origin and Interpretation of the Tetragrammaton: Submitted in Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy to the Faculty of Philosophy, New York University, 1899 I count myself happy that my teacher, Professor Prince, has permitted me to choose this subject for my dissertation. My most hearty thanks are due to him for the kind interest which he has always taken in my work and for his suggestive instruction. I also gratefully acknowledge my indebtedness to my teacher, Professor F. Brown. To his inspiring teaching I owe my love for the historical study of the Old Testament. His kind interest has never been wanting, and to him I owe many valuable sug gestions. My thanks are also due to my teacher, Professor Osborn, for his teaching and the kind interest he has taken in my work. Book Description
Two momentous happenings in the history of Israel would affect pronunciation of the Tetragrammaton: 1)The 9th century division of the Israelite kingdom: Henceforth the ten-tribe kingdom would look northwards to expand cultural and commercial interests. This would cause northern Jews to rub shoulders with Phoenicians, causing the highly developed Phoenician tongue to make inroads in the North Israelite dialect. 2)The Babylonian exile: In time Babylonians would overrun the two-tribe kingdom of Judah-Benjamin. This would cause remnants of Aramaic pronunciation to become firmly entrenched in the South Israelite (Judahite) dialect. The proposed Albright-Reisel Hypothesis of North and South Israelite Pronunciation not only provides a framework for classifying all known vocalizations of the Tetragrammaton but goes a long way to explain most forms and irregularities.

Book Description
The God of ancient Israel—universally referred to in the masculine today—was understood by its earliest worshipers to be a dual-gendered, male-female deity. So argues Mark Sameth in The Name. Needless to say, this is no small claim. Half the people on the planet are followers of one of the three Abrahamic religions—Judaism, Christianity, and Islam—each of which has roots in the ancient cult that worshiped this deity. The author’s evidence, however, is compelling and his case meticulously constructed. The Hebrew name of God—YHWH—has not been uttered in public for over two thousand years. Some thought the lost pronunciation was “Jehovah” or “Yahweh.” But Sameth traces the name to the late Bronze Age and argues that it was expressed Hu-Hi—Hebrew for “He-She.” Among Jewish mystics, we learn, this has long been an open secret. What are the implications for us today if “he” was not God?
