Book Description
This volume brings together a series of essays delivered at the international colloquium "Historic Organs Reconsidered: Restoration and Conservation for a New Century," held in 1999 at Historic St. Luke's Church in Smithfield, Virginia. With St. Luke's exceptionally rare 1630 English chamber organ as a backdrop, invited authorities from seven countries offered diverse views on musical, ethical, and historical issues driving organ restoration today. Part 1 of the book places the often-vexing issues of organ restoration in the broader context of musical instrument restoration and historic preservation and considers the implications of emerging "forensic" examination methods for restoration ethics. Part 2 visits two conservation laboratories, providing an inside glimpse of new approaches to preservation-minded restoration. Part 3 focuses specifically on Historic St. Luke's organ and its musical history, with attention to the organ's possible builder, its first owners, and early repertory. Part 4 offers perspectives on restoration through case studies of other historic organs in Europe and America.

Book Description
Articles on English music, from the medieval period to the present day, centred on four of the major areas of scholarly enquiry. The major themes of the essays in this collection reflect the work of the distinguished scholar John Caldwell, professor of music at Oxford University and a composer in his own right. There is a strong focus on early music, with contributions considering the medieval carol, sources for seventeenth- and eighteenth-century harpsichord music, and the transmission of fifteenth-century English music to the Continent; but they range right up to the twentieth century, with an examination of music in Oxford. All are concerned in one way or another with themes which recur in Professor Caldwell's scholarship: sources; style; performance; and historiography. Contributors: SALLY HARPER, DAVID HILEY, EMMA HORNBY, HARRY JOHNSTONE, MARGARET BENT, DAVID MAW, MATTHIAS RANGE, REINHARD STROHM, PETER WRIGHT, MAGNUS WILLIAMSON, JOHN HARPER, SIMON MCVEIGH, CHRISTOPHER PAGE, OWEN REES, SUSAN WOLLENBERG, JOHN ARTHUR SMITH, BENNETT ZON, DAVID MAW. Book Description
Organ Repair and Regeneration: Preserving Organs in the Regenerative Medicine Era encompasses updates on all organs, from the kidneys, to the lungs, liver, pancreas, intestines, and beyond. Chapters cover the pathophysiology of ischemia-reperfusion, repairing organs with MSC, repairing cardiac allografts in situ, and much more. The book conceptualizes the idea that the modern approach to organ preservation is ante literam, a form of organ repair and regeneration which, per se, is referred to as a field of health sciences under the umbrella of regenerative medicine. This book demonstrates the merging of regenerative medicine and organ transplantation. Covers all aspects of organ preservation, repair and regeneration Addresses the repair of organs that experience an Ischemia/Reperfusion (I/R) injury, those that are intended for transplantation, and specific issues related to each organ Presented by editors and authors who are physicians, surgeons and researchers in the field of organ transplantation and regenerative medicine
