Book Description
Excerpt from Treatise and Hand Book on Orange Culture in Florida The writer for several years suffered greatly for want of some reliable advice ou Orange Culture. Could he have had such instructions as the following pages contain he might have hastened forward to profitable bearing by several years an orange grove now crowning his labors with success. He could have done this with half the amount of money expended by him in experimenting, in following unreliable advice, and in doing, what at the time, seemed wisest. It is to save others such useless expenditures and to help forward the best material interest of Florida that he has undertaken to give to the public the result of his experience and observation on Orange Culture in Florida. Nor has he undertaken this without the earnest solicitation of many who are engaged in orange growing and have witnessed his success and discussed with him his plans. The writer has not only had ten years of actual experience in orange growing, but he has had before him a wide field for observing the efforts of others engaged in this business. He has had throughout his life a passion for horticulture; in early life considerable experience as an amateur cultivator of fruits. For twenty-five years he has been accustomed to eat fresh from the trees the orange grown in Cuba, in Central America, in California, in Louisiana and in Florida. His admiration of this "queen of fruits" has led him to observe and inquire after the methods of culture in each of these several countries. During the ten years of his experience lie has frequently traveled over the State of Florida, visiting, at all seasons of the year, the various sections engaged in growing oranges, discussing with growers their theories and noting the results of their efforts. This little work, therefore, is not the result of the experience of a single individual confined to a single location, but the result of experiments, successes and failures of the many, extended over the State of Florida. Book Description
Excerpt from Treatise and Hand-Book of Orange Culture in Florida The largest of these wild orange groves, twenty and fifty years ago, were found along the eastern and southern shores of rivers and lakes, and in the hammock and swamp lands of Florida. In addition to the protection from damage by the frost to the young plants, afforded by the water, the ham mock and swamp. Lands gave protection against fires, which annually swept over the pine-woods, destroy ing the slow-growing trees. Some of these wild groves were, fifty years ago, cut down and the land cleared for planting corn, cotton, and cane. This was repeated as late as twenty-five years ago, before the monetary value of the orange was appreciated in this country.vi preface TO the fourth edition. Book Description
Excerpt from Orange Culture: A Treatise on the Citrus Family Of all the plants spread by Nature upon the surface of the globe, there are none more beautiful than those we know under the names of Citron, lemon, and orange trees, which botanists have included under the technical and generic name of Citrus. These charming trees are both useful and ornamental. No others equal them in beauty of leaf, delightful odor of flowers, or splendor and taste of fruit. No other plant supplies delicious confections, agreeable seasonings, perfumes, essences, syrups, and the valuable acid so useful to colorers. In a word, these trees charm the eye, satisfy the smell, gratify the taste, serving both luxury and art, and presenting to astonished man a union of all delights. These brilliant qualities have made the Citrus a favorite in all countries. In warm climates it is the object of careful culture, and in more temperate climes it is the necessary ornament of country-seats and villas, while, still further north, it has originated those inventions in building designed by luxury to make a summer in the midst of winter. Writers upori agriculture have occupied themselves with the culti vation and description, and with all tending to the preservation, propagation, and uses of these trees. Book Description
Excerpt from Practical Orange Culture, Including the Culture of the Orange, Lemon, Lime and Other Citrus Fruits, as Grown in Florida Orange culture, like everything else in our busy modern world, is progressive. What a few years since was a chaos of conflicting opinions and practice has been reduced to something like system. The more successful growers throughout the State pursue essentially the same plan, modified to suit the peculiarities of soil, location, etc., with which they have to deal. The following pages are intended to be a practical guide to orange culture, according to the most approved methods. The profits and delights of orange culture do not come, strictly speaking, within the scope of this work, and they have been too often and too fully set before the public to need further mention here. The author has not attempted the history of the orange and its congeners any further than is involved in a descriptive list of the varieties known in Florida. The origination and introduction of the several species and varieties are treated at length in other accessible works, and though the subject is one of great interest, it has no practical bearing upon successful culture in this State. Bearing groves have been made in an incredibly short time by grafting or budding wild trees found in the State. These wild groves, few at most, have now almost or entirely disappeared, and methods for their development having no longer a general application have not been thought sufficiently pertinent for a place in these pages. Book Description
Excerpt from Treatise and Handbook of Orange-Culture in Auckland, New Zealand With a view of encouraging the more extensive culture of Citrus fruits in the northern portion of New Zealand, and of aiding planters with reliable information on the subject, the author of this handbook was empowered by the New Zealand Government to visit New South Wales in 1884, to personally inquire into and report upon the methods of cultivating the orange, as pursued there. The result of that inquiry is embodied in the following pages, as are also all the data which the writer has been able to obtain from different sources of information, after a diligent research extending over some years. The author was largely indebted to the Chief Secretary of New South Wales - R. C. Critchett Walker, Esq. - for many services and courtesies. The reports and papers supplied by that gentleman were of the greatest value. One, a report of a Select Committee appointed by the New South Wales Legislature to inquire into and report upon orange-culture, furnishes information on every conceivable point. Another, the report of Charles Moore, Esq., Director of the Sydney Botanic Gardens, who was sent to Spain and Portugal by the Government to inquire into and report upon the same subject, was no less valuable. The gist of these inquiries is embodied in this work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from A Treatise on the Culture of the Orange: Together With a Description of Some of the Best Varieties of the Fruit, Gathering, Curing and Preparing the Fruit for Shipment and Market The most important consideration when starting an orange grove, is location. This should be near some sure and permanent line of transportation, or in the immediate vicinity of some proposed line which will he sure to be established in the near future. There are at present many fine bearing groves scattered over the State, from ten lo thirty miles from an outlet; and hauling boxes of oranges that far by wagon is attended with a good deal of expense and often loss of much of the fruit by bruising, which unfits it for transportation to distant markets. In regard to latitude and longitude, we believe oranges can be successfully grown, in good locations, anywhere south of the Georgia line. There are many small groves of old trees in the vicinity of Jacksonville, in latitude 30 20', also on Amelia Island, which have borne fairly for the last forty years.
