This text consists of 17 chapters and begins with an introductory chapter to the historical background of investigations of the resonance-enhanced nonlinear optical properties of semiconductors and their manifestations in optical instabilities. Of the variety of nonlinear dynamical systems that exhibit deterministic chaos optical systems both lasers and passive devices provide nearly ideal systems for quantitative investigation due to their simplicity both in construction and in the mathematics that describes them. In view of their growing technical application the understanding, control and possible exploitation of sources of instability in these systems has considerable practical importance. The aim of this volume is to provide a comprehensive coverage of the current understanding of optical instabilities through a series of reviews by leading researchers in the field. The book comprises nine chapters, five on active (laser) systems and four on passive optically bistable systems. Instabilities and chaos in single- (and multi-) mode lasers with homogeneously and broadened gain media are presented and the influence of an injected signal, loss modulation and also feedback of laser output on this behaviour is treated. Both electrically excited and optically pumped gas lasers are considered, and an analysis of dynamical instabilities in the emission from free electron lasers are presented. Instabilities in passive optically bistable systems include a detailed analysis of the global bifurcations and chaos in which transverse effects are accounted for. Experimental verification of degenerative pulsations and chaos in intrinsic bistable systems is described for various optical feedback systems in which atomic and molecular gases and semiconductors are used as the nonlinear media. Results for a hybrid bistable optical system are significant in providing an important test of current understanding of the dynamical behaviour of passive bistable systems.

Arecchi and R.G. Harrison [Instabilities and Chaos in Quantum Optics, (Springer, Berlin, 1987) 1. That volume provides more detailed information about some of these topics. Together they will serve as a comprehensive and tutorial pair of companion volumes. This school was directed by Prof. Massimo Inguscio, of the Department of Physics, University of Naples, Naples, Italy to whom we express our gratitude on behalf of all lecturers and students. Instabilities associated with hot electrons in semiconductors have been investigated from the beginning of transistor physics in the 194Os. The study of NDR and impact ionization in bulk material led to devices like the Gunn diode and the avalanche-photo-diode. In layered semiconductors domain formation in HEMTs can lead to excess gate leakage and to excess noise. The studies of hot electron transport parallel to the layers in heterostructures, single and multiple, have shown abundant evidence of electrical instability and there has been no shortage of suggestions concerning novel NDR mechanisms, such as real space transfer, scattering induced NDR, inter-sub band transfer, percolation effects etc. Real space transfer has been exploited in negative-resistance PETs (NERFETs) and in the charge-injection transistor (CHINT) and in light emitting logic devices, but far too little is known and understood about other NDR mechanisms with which quantum well material appears to be particularly well-endowed, for these to be similarly exploited. The aim of this book is therefore to collate what is known and what is not known about NDR instabilities, and to identify promising approaches and techniques which will increase our understanding of the origin of these instabilities which have been observed during the last decade of investigations into high-field longitudinal transport in layered semiconductors. The book covers the fundamental properties of hot carrier transport and the associated instabilities and light emission in 2-dimensional semiconductors dealing with both theory and experiment.

[Truncated abstract] This thesis reports the experimental observations of radiation pressure induced optical instabilities in a 80 m suspended high optical power cavity. These instabilities have the potential to disrupt the operation of the next generation gravitational wave detectors. This thesis provides the theoretical development, as well as experimental results and solutions to two such optical instabilities. The rst experiment describes and presents results on the angular optical instability e ect, where, depending on several parameters, the optical spring e ect could disrupt the performance of gravitational wave interferometers. The second experiment presents two potential solutions for parametric instability, a known threat to high power Fabry-P erot optical cavities. In the angular optical instability experiment presented in this thesis, it was found that the magnitude of the negative optical spring constant per unit power is a few N m=W as the result of optical torsional sti ness in the yaw mode of the suspended mirror south arm Fabry-P erot cavity at AIGO. These results are shown to be consistent with the theory, reviewed also in this theory, of the optical torque e ect as described by Sidles and Sigg in their paper published in 2006 [56]. The parametric instability experiment described in this thesis provides a preliminary solution to the opto-acoustic parametric interactions as they arise in high power, suspended Fabry-P erot cavities. This experiment demonstrated the suppression of an excited high order in the south arm Fabry-P erot cavity at AIGO, by injecting a low power, anti-phase TEM01 mode, as part of an optical feedback loop, into the cavity to destructively interfere with the excited cavity mode. Although preliminary, the results of this experiment provide a stepping stone to nding a solution using an optical feedback loop, to suppress parametric instability in advanced gravitational wave detectors...
