Book Description
Fundamental changes in Brazilian economic policy in the mid-1990s have dramatically slowed inflation and set the stage for sustained growth. These gains provide the opportunity to turn to other social and economic problems overshadowed for years by the country's macroeconomic problems. Among the most important issues on the agenda is education. Opportunity Foregone: Education in Brazil offers a frank and thorough assessment of the country's educational performance and the resulting social costs. It identifies necessary reforms and the barriers to reform. The book's 18 studies examine a wide variety of key issues regarding the economics of education in Brazil.

Enrichment at the Claimant's Expense
Author: Eli Ball
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1782258418
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 253
Book Description
This book presents an account of attribution in unjust enrichment. Attribution refers to how and when two parties – a claimant and a defendant – are relevantly connected to each other for unjust enrichment purposes. It is reflected in the familiar expression that a defendant be 'enriched at the claimant's expense'. This book presents a structured account of attribution, consisting of two requirements: first, the identification of an enrichment to the defendant and a loss to the claimant; and, secondly, the identification of a connection between that enrichment and that loss. These two requirements must be kept separate from other considerations often subsumed within the expression 'enrichment at the claimant's expense' which in truth have nothing to do with attribution, and which instead qualify unjust enrichment liability for reasons that should be analysed in their own terms. The structure of attribution so presented fits a normative account of unjust enrichment based upon each party's exchange capacities. A defendant is enriched when he receives something that he has not paid for under prevailing market conditions, while a claimant suffers a loss when he loses the opportunity to charge for something under the same conditions. A counterfactual test – asking whether enrichment and loss arise 'but for' each other – provides the best generalisation for testing whether enrichment and loss are connected, thereby satisfying the requirements of attribution in unjust enrichment.

Management Science
Author: Hans Daellenbach
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1137075120
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 608
Book Description
Management Science provides a comprehensive, accessible overview of the subject, incorporating a broad set of approaches and tools. The authors explore both 'soft' and 'hard' methodologies and highlight conceptual aspects rather than the mathematics of the techniques or computer methods. The book is therefore suitable for students and readers with a wide range of mathematical abilities at both the undergraduate and MBA level. The book bases management science within a clear systems thinking framework. Ideas and concepts are demonstrated with real-life examples and case studies. Readers are shown how decision making over time, under uncertainty, and subject to constraints, multiple objectives, and value and perception conflicts can be modelled, all within this system thinking framework. The second edition of Management Science offers: - An emphasis on problem formulation, indicating how management science and operational research techniques fit into the wider problem-solving process - Revised chapters on queuing, simulation, and problem structuring methods - updated coverage of forecasting, linear and integer programming - New sections on the role of management science consultants - Improved pedagogy, navigation and design - Up-to-date coverage of software - Real-world case studies, encouraging the reader to apply the concepts studied Comprehensive student and lecturer resources are available at www.palgrave.com/business/daellenbach2.

The Mystery of the Invisible Hand
Author: Marshall Jevons
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 0691259356
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 352
Book Description
Economics professor and amateur detective Henry Spearman tackles a mystery where the price of art is murder In The Mystery of the Invisible Hand, Henry Spearman, an economics professor with a knack for solving crimes, is pulled into a case that mixes campus intrigue, stolen art, and murder. Arriving at San Antonio’s Monte Vista University to teach a course on art and economics, he is confronted with a puzzling art theft and the suspicious suicide of the school’s artist-in-residence. From Texas to New York, Spearman traces the connections between economics and the art world, finding his clues in monopolies, auction theory, and Adam Smith. How is a company’s capital like an art museum’s collection? What does the market say about art’s authenticity versus its availability? What is the mysterious “death effect”—and does it lie at the heart of the case? Spearman must rely on his savviest economic thinking to answer these questions—and pin down a killer.
