Book Description
Some forty years later, the Allied landings on the Italian coast at Salerno before dawn on September 9, 1943, seem only a part of one of the half-forgotten campaigns of World War II. Yet it was in its day the largest amphibious invasion becoming the Allies' costliest blunder. Codenamed "Avalanche," the operation under U.S. General Mark Clark involved 500 ships and 165,000 American and British servicemen in the hazardous attempt to establish on the mainland of Occupied Europe a beachhead. It was the Allies' misfortune that the beach was ringed by jagged mountains where large concentrations of Hitler's Wehrmacht - the best-organized, best-equipped, most battle-proven army in the world - were securely dug into superb defensive positions. Mark Clark predicted that "Avalanche" would achieve its major objective, the capture of Naples, within three days. It was a bad miscalculation. "Avalanche" lasted for twenty-one desperate days and for a time threatened to become a greater débâcle than Gallipoli or Dunkirk. What went wrong? This book recreates those twenty-one critical days to provide some brutal answers. -- from inside jacket flap.

Book Description
Among the operations known as Plan Bodyguard, the deception devised to cover the Allies’ Normandy landing, was the little known but critical Plan Zeppelin, the largest and most complex of the Bodyguard plans. Zeppelin, in conjunction with the Mediterranean Strategy, succeeded in pinning down sixty German divisions from southern France to the Balkans in time for D-Day. This was the work of “A” Force, Britain’s only military organization tasked with carrying out both strategic and tactical deception in World War II. Whitney T. Bendeck’s Diversion and Deception finds “A” Force at its finest hour, as the war shifted from North Africa to Europe. Focusing on the years 1943 to 1945, Bendeck describes how “A” Force, under the leadership of Dudley Clarke, orchestrated both strategic and tactical deception plans to create notional threats across the southern perimeter of Europe, with the chief objective of keeping the Germans pinned down across the Mediterranean. Her work offers a close and clarifying look at “A” Force’s structure and command, operations and methods, and successes and failures and, consequently, its undeniable contribution to the Allies’ victory in World War II. By shining a light on the often overlooked Mediterranean theater and its direct connection to European plans and operations, Diversion and Deception also provides a deeper understanding of Allied grand strategy in the war. Combining military and deception histories—so often viewed in isolation—this book provides context for the deceptions and adds a layer of knowledge regarding the planning of military operations. The result is a more complete and nuanced view of Allied operations than is to be found in most histories of World War II.

Book Description
A compelling account of the fierce ten-day battle that led to the end of Mussolini’s rule, with maps and photos. In September 1943, in the first weeks of the Allied campaign to liberate Italy, an Anglo-American invasion force of over 80,000 men was nearly beaten back into the sea by the German defenders in a ferocious ten-day battle at Salerno, south of Naples. This is the story of the tense, bitter struggle around the Salerno beachhead which decided the issue and changed the course of the campaign. For those ten critical days, the fate of Italy hung in the balance. Using documentary records, memoirs, and eyewitness accounts from all sides, Angus Konstam re-creates every stage of the battle at every level as it happened, day by day, hour by hour. His painstakingly researched account offers a fresh perspective on a decisive battle that has been neglected by British and American historians in recent years, and it gives a fascinating insight into the realities of warfare in Europe eighty years ago. Praise for Angus Konstam’s previous books “Wonderful details.” —Publishers Weekly “Riveting.” —History of War "Interesting and exciting . . . thoroughly enjoyable.” —Booklist

Book Description
George S. Patton Jr. lived an exciting life in war and peace, but he is best remembered for his World War II battlefield exploits. Patton’s War: An American General’s Combat Leadership: November 1942–July 1944, the first of three volumes, follows the general from the beaches of Morocco to the fields of France, right before the birth of Third Army on the continent. In highly engaging fashion, Kevin Hymel uncovers new facts and challenges long-held beliefs about the mercurial Patton, not only examining his relationships with his superiors and fellow generals and colonels, but also with the soldiers of all ranks whom he led. Using new sources unavailable to previous historians and through extensive research of soldiers’ memoirs and interviews, Hymel adds a new dimension to the telling of Patton’s WWII story.

Book Description
Riversdale Robert 'Barney' Barnfather was an RAF fighter pilot who flew Spitfires in action almost continuously from November 1941 until the end of the war in Europe. Barney was often in the thick of the fighting and saw action in the offensive sweeps over France, in the desperate air battle for Malta, the fighting in North Africa, the invasions of Sicily and Italy, and finally on the fringes of the Third Reich over Austria in 1945. This type of experienced and brave pilot formed the backbone of Fighter Command and after many operational flying hours, clashes with enemy aircraft and even a mid-air collision, he survived it all relatively unscathed. Thanks to the fascinating personal log book that Barney kept of his experiences, the contributions from his former colleagues and extensive historical research, Angus Mansfield has produced a detailed and enthralling history of a Spitfire pilot's escapades thousands of feet above the battlefields of the Second World War.
