The history of cinema charts multiple histories of exile. From the German émigrés in 1930s Hollywood to today's Iranian filmmakers in Europe and the United States, these histories continue to exert a profound influence on the evolution of cinematic narratives and aesthetics. But while the effect of exile and diaspora on film practice has been fruitfully explored from both historical and contemporary perspectives, the issues raised by return, whether literal or metaphorical, have yet to be fully considered. Ke Huy Quan, also known as Jonathan Ke Quan, is a Vietnamese-American actor, stunt coordinator, and director. He was born on August 20, 1971, in Saigon, South Vietnam, but his family fled to the United States after the Fall of Saigon when he was only eight years old. Growing up, Quan was known for being a wunderkind child actor, famous for his roles in Hollywood blockbusters like The Goonies and Indiana Jones and the Temple of the Doom. Despite his initial success in the entertainment industry, Quan decided to step away from acting after struggling with Hollywood's expectations and bias towards Asian actors. Instead, he went to school for cinematography and later worked as a stunt coordinator for major films like X-Men and The One. In recent years, Quan has directed his focus towards producing and directing his own independent films, like the zombie comedy film Spaced Invaders. Hollywood is currently one of the largest and most profitable sectors of the U.S. economy. In just a few decades, it has transformed itself from a dying company town into a merchandising emporium of movies, games, and licensed characters. It is quickly moving even further into cyberspace, virtual reality, and digital imaging. Aida Hozic writes of these enormous changes in the film industry from a novel perspective: by tracing shifts in spatial organization of film production from the enclosed worlds of old Hollywood studios through globally dispersed location shooting to digital production and distribution. Hozic's fascinating tale of latter-day capitalism suggests that the physical reorganization of production—across the American economy, but in Hollywood in particular—alters material and conceptual boundaries between work and leisure, public and private, reality and fantasy.
