"The Onshore Basin Inventory is a summary of data and geological knowledge of hydrocarbon-prone onshore basins of Australia. Volume 1 of the inventory covers the McArthur, South Nicholson, Georgina, Wiso, Amadeus, Warburton, Cooper and Galilee basins. Under the Exploring for the Future (EFTF) program, Geoscience Australia expanded this work to compile the Onshore Basin Inventory volume 2, which covers the Officer, onshore Canning and Perth basins. These reports provide a whole-of-basin inventory of geology, petroleum systems, exploration status and data coverage. Each report also summarises aspects that require further work. "Following the publication of Geoscience Australia record 2014/09: Petroleum geology inventory of Australia's offshore frontier basins by Totterdell et al (2014), the onshore petroleum section embarked upon a similar project for onshore Australian basins. "A large proportion of Australia's onshore sedimentary basins remain exploration frontiers. Industry interest in these basins has recently increased due to the global and domestic energy demand, and the growth in unconventional hydrocarbon exploration. In 2016, Geoscience Australia released an assessment of eight central Australian basins that summarised the current status of geoscientific knowledge and petroleum exploration, and the key questions, for each basin. This publication provides a comprehensive assessment of the geology, petroleum systems, exploration status and data coverage for additional three basins in western and central Australia: the Canning, Perth and Officer basins. The Perth and Canning basins are producing petroleum basins, however, they may be regarded as frontier basins for unconventional hydrocarbon resources. This EPCA Phase III Inventory includes, for the first time, the entire onshore United States. This is a detailed review of Federal oil and gas resources and constraints on their development within 18 geological provinces. In addition, the rest of the country was extrapolated from the results of these provinces studied in detail. For the Federal agencies that manage public land (principally the Bureau of Land Management and the Forest Service) and the citizens they serve, this Inventory will serve primarily as a planning tool. It provides public land managers with additional information to help develop land management plans. This report is a critical step in evaluating whether the documented impediments and restrictions are appropriate, and to what extent they constrain oil and gas development. The Inventory examines in detail six geological provinces in addition to the twelve included in the Phase II of EPCA. These six provinces are Central Alaska (Yukon Flats portion); Southern Alaska; Eastern Oregon-Washington; the Ventura Basin in California; the Eastern Great Basin in Idaho, Nevada, Utah and Arizona; and the Williston Basin in Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota.

"This release presents a large majority of the inventory of public oil and gas resources requested by Congress. The EPCA Phase II inventory is a comprehensive review of Federal oil and gas resources and constraints on their development within 11 geologic provinces across the United States. It is cumulative in that it incorporates the Phase I areas (geologic provinces of the Interior West). Further, it represents an expansion of the inventory to include previously unstudied areas in the Interior West, Northern Alaska and several Eastern basins. The EPCA requires that all onshore Federal lands be inventoried. Areas addressed in the Phase II inventory contain approximately 76 percent of the onshore natural gas and oil under Federal ownership. The inventory will be expanded in the future to include all Federal lands and resources"--Page xxi.
