Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2017 in the subject Sociology - Economy and Industry, Adekunle Ajasin University, language: English, abstract: This study engaged in a thorough and analytical historical research on the activities of the Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission with a specific attention on the impact of OSOPADEC on the Development of Riverine Communities in Ondo State. The Study covered the activities of the Ondo State Oil Producing Area Development Commission (OSOPADEC) for fifteen (15) years between 2001 and 2016. Year 2001 being the year OSOPADEC was established and 2016 as the terminal date being the end of the tenure of People's Democratic Party {PDP} in Ondo State. A new political party known as All Progressive Congress (APC) took over the mantle of leadership of the state on 24th February 2017. Since the pioneer discovery of oil in Araromi in 1908, and the subsequent exploration and exploitation of the resource, the ecological and, or environmental condition of the riverine communities in Ondo State implies an impending doom. While some interest laden individual along the inroad of truth smiles to the bank on daily basis or enjoy largesse from oil exploration and exploitation from the area, communities in the riverine part of Ondo State are yet to enjoy rapid, even and sustainable development. Many of these communities lack basic social amenities such as good road network, potable water supply, adequate health facilities, power supply etc. and this horrible situation remain so till date. One then wonders, how the 13% oil derivation fund paid to the state to address developmental challenges spent? How the 40% of the 13% derivation fund committed to OSOPADEC utilized? Above all, when put up against the fund disbursed to the Commission, can the bogus claim of OSOPADEC and government on infrastructural and developmental projects in the region be said to have brought about true development vis-à-vis the standard of development expected of the commission?

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2009 in the subject African Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, University of Nigeria (University of Ibadan, Nigeria), language: English, abstract: This paper focuses on the socio-political and economic issues involved in the production of oil producing and non-oil producing communities as categories of identification in Nigeria. Using Ilaje people of Ondo State as a case, this paper, through qualitative methods of study, examines the factors of history, elite politics, and the state in identity formulation and the effects which the construction of the “other” among a supposed homogeneous group has on the existing forms of social relationship. It is established from the study that though the advantage of the oil producing community identity is utilized to attain political and economic height, the identity remains subordinate to a much larger and inclusive Ilaje identity. Generally, this paper is a reflection on how identity is manipulated even in the local context to suit competition for resources. It discusses the cultural creation of space and its hegemonization in quest of making exclusive and optimum advantage of resource in the space. The paper concludes that even when the spatial differentiation is yet to generate any remarkable conflict, the feelings of “oneness” appears to have been sufficiently weakened.

Dr. Olusegun Mimiko competed in the gubernatorial elections on April 14, 2007, against the incumbent Olusegun Agagu. The Independent Electoral Commission INEC, departing from the norm, announced election results in Abuja, the federal capital, declaring the incumbent the winner. Mimiko contested this decision at the election tribunal and was adjudged winner at the tribunal and the Court of Appeal on February 23, 2009. The Appeal Court, liked the court of first instance, cited massive irregularities in the 2007 election, and ordered that Agagu be replaced by Mimiko as governor. Mimiko then became the first and only member of the Labour Party to win gubernatorial office in Nigeria. Governor Olusegun Mimiko contested and won re-election on October 20, 2012, for a second term, making him the first governor in Ondo State to win a second term election. Mimiko stood in that election as the Labour Party candidate for Nigeria’s Ondo State and polled the highest votes. The court drama that pitched Dr. Rahman Olusegun Mimiko against Dr. Olusegun Kokumo Agagu lasted for two years, 2007 to 2009. It consumed the energy of hundreds of lawyers and the attention of millions of Nigerians. On the one hand was the Mimiko team, considered the under-dog in the struggle, with only the rightness of their cause as their succour, and their belief that somehow, God was on their side. On the other hand was the Agagu team, the incumbent power supported by federal might and endless resources in money, material and confidence.
