Book Description
Excerpt from On the Kinetic Theory of Steady Gas Flows The problem discussed in this report was suggested by Harold Grad. It is with warmth and pleasure that the author acknowledges his gratitude to him, not only for the suggestion of the problem, but also for the many stimulating and inspir ing discussions. In this connection the author is also grateful to Dr. Harold Weitzner for his helpful suggestions and discussions, especially in connection with the theory of generalized functions, and to Dr. Clifford Gardner who. Book Description
Excerpt from A Treatise on the Kinetic: Theory of Gases It appears to me that the law of equality of mean kinetic energy for each degree of freedom cannot be reconciled with my proposed form of Q; that in fact the law holds only for the limiting case of a very rare gas. Book Description
Excerpt from A Kinetic Theory of Gases and Liquids In constructing a general Kinetic Theory the problem that presents itself first for investigation is the dependence of the velocity of translation of a molecule in a substance on its density and temperature. It is often assumed that this velocity is the same in the liquid as in the gaseous state at the same temperature. It can be shown, however, that this holds only for each molecule at the instant it passes through a point in the substance at which the forces of the surrounding molecules neutralize each other. The total average velocity corresponding to the whole path of a mole cule is usually much greater than the foregoing velocity in a liquid and dense gas on account of the effect of the molecular forces of attraction and repulsion. Book Description
This book can be described as a student's edition of the author's Dynamical Theory of Gases. It is written, however, with the needs of the student of physics and physical chemistry in mind, and those parts of which the interest was mainly mathematical have been discarded. This does not mean that the book contains no serious mathematical discussion; the discussion in particular of the distribution law is quite detailed; but in the main the mathematics is concerned with the discussion of particular phenomena rather than with the discussion of fundamentals.
