Book Description
Excerpt from A Contribution to the Physical Analysis of the Phenomena of Absorption of Liquids by Animal Tissues Van't Hoff, applying certain facts brought out by Traube and Pfeffer regarding the influence Of semi-permeable membranes upon processes of osmosis, Showed that sub stances in solution Obey the ordinary laws Of gases, as brought forth by Boyle, Henry, gay-lussac, and Avogadro. In consequence Of this similarity between gases and sub stances in solution, the latter will exert a pressure upon the walls Ofa containing vessel equal to the pressure which the dissolved substance would exert were it present in the gaseous form under the same conditions Of temperature and molecular aggregation. Whether this pressure, which van't Hoff calls osmotic pressure, be due to the impacts Of the dissolved particles against the walls Of the containing vessel, as the kinetic theory Of gases would demand, or whether it be an expression Of the attraction Of the dissolved particles for water, concerns us, in these experiments, only in so far as our work has to do with the dynamics Of the process Of absorption. Book Description
The solubility of gases and liquids in liquids is of great importance in large areas of operations based on chemical concepts. Phenomena have appeared to be so varied that even experts have from time to time remarked on the difficulty of seeing a consistent pattern. Now for the first time the essential pattern of all known gas solubility data is set out in a graphic form for all to see. The continuous merging of the gas-liquid systems and the liquid-liquid systems is also illustrated. The pattern opens the way to rational predictions. The new data given for the lower alkanes and alkenes, the three methylamines, ammonia, bromomethane, and chloroethane, together with my previously reported data on hydrogen sulfide, dimethyl ether, chloromethane, and sulfur dioxide, have been obtained by a bubbler-manometer procedure which is fully described. Not only are these data of significance in many chemical processes, but they have also been vital to the development of the overall essential pattern covering all gases. The book is for chemists, chemical engineers, biotechnologists, certain physi cists, and teachers and students in these disciplines. It is a book for all those who are concerned with the use and inculcation of the fundamental, even rudimentary, principles of chemistry.

Book Description
From the revolutionary discoveries of Galileo and Newton to the mind-bending theories of Einstein and Heisenberg, from plate tectonics to particle physics, from the origin of life to universal entropy, and from biology to cosmology, here is a sweeping, readable, and dynamic account of the whole of Western science. In the approachable manner and method of Stephen Jay Gould and Carl Sagan, the late Brian L. Silver translates our most important, and often most obscure, scientific developments into a vernacular that is not only accessible and illuminating but also enjoyable. Silver makes his comprehensive case with much clarity and insight; his book aptly locates science as the apex of human reason, and reason as our best path to the truth. For all readers curious about--or else perhaps intimidated by--what Silver calls "the scientific campaign up to now" in his Preface, The Ascent of Science will be fresh, vivid, and fascinating reading.
