Book Description
Concepts related to loss of performance in certain adaptive control systems are introduced. These concepts are useful in determining or in bounding possible loss in the adaptive control systems where certain parameters are not known precisely. The relation with the minimax principle in the statistical decision theory is also pointed out. Loss of performance and percentage loss of performance are approxi mately calculated for the sample problems in terms of moments of distribution functions which specify probability distribution of unknown parameter B. It is shown that for certain system parameter combinations, the estimate should be changed with time even though no additional information on the unknown parameter is gathered. (Author).

Book Description
One approach to the solution of optimal control problems has been to assume a priori distributions of parameter values, which are updated if and when additional information on system behavior becomes available. Different a priori probability distributions, however, imply different amounts of cost paid due to adaptation and it is of considerable interest to compute the price paid for adaptation for different adaptive systems converging to the same system. This is the second question. There is discussed a related problem to this second question: In order to minimize some measure of loss of performance how to assign values to these imprecisely known parameters initially before adaptation processes begin, or how to assign values throughout the control periods if additional observations on the parameters are not permitted or are not feasible. The concept of loss of performance and that of percentage loss of performance are introduced and the assignment of parameter values is done so as to minimize the average loss of performance (or percentage performance), the average being taken over the distribution of unknown parameter values. (Author).

Book Description
In this book, we study theoretical and practical aspects of computing methods for mathematical modelling of nonlinear systems. A number of computing techniques are considered, such as methods of operator approximation with any given accuracy; operator interpolation techniques including a non-Lagrange interpolation; methods of system representation subject to constraints associated with concepts of causality, memory and stationarity; methods of system representation with an accuracy that is the best within a given class of models; methods of covariance matrix estimation; methods for low-rank matrix approximations; hybrid methods based on a combination of iterative procedures and best operator approximation; and methods for information compression and filtering under condition that a filter model should satisfy restrictions associated with causality and different types of memory. As a result, the book represents a blend of new methods in general computational analysis, and specific, but also generic, techniques for study of systems theory ant its particular branches, such as optimal filtering and information compression. - Best operator approximation, - Non-Lagrange interpolation, - Generic Karhunen-Loeve transform - Generalised low-rank matrix approximation - Optimal data compression - Optimal nonlinear filtering

Book Description
Sensitivity Methods in Control Theory is a collection of manuscripts presented as the Third International Symposium of Sensitivity Analysis, held at Dubrovnik, Yugoslavia on August 31-September 5, 1964, sponsored by The Theory Committee of International Federation of Automatic Control. Sensitivity theory or sensitivity analysis concerns the solution of problems associated with parameter variations within the general scope of control theory. This book is organized into five parts encompassing 30 chapters. Part I presents some basic approaches of sensitivity analysis, such the Lyapunov's theory of stability, invariant imbedding, nonlinear sampled data, and linear time-varying systems. This part also looks into the preliminary steps towards the development of game theory and some general applications of sensitivity analysis. Part II treats the problem of accuracy, reliability, self-adjustment, and optimization of sensitivity of automatic control systems, while Part III deals with the functional derivative technique of sensitivity analysis and its applications for designing self-adjusting control systems. Part IV describes the task of synthesizing control systems for linear plants with variable parameters satisfying specified performance criteria. Part V considers the association between sensitivity and optimality in various control systems. This book will prove useful to design and other specialized fields in engineering.
