Book Description

Book Description
Published on the occasion of his solo exhibition at the Manoir de la Ville de Martigny (February - May 2018), this publication is the first monograph on Swiss painter Sylvain Croci-Torti.Organized around an extensive photographic documentation of his Martigny show, but encompassing the last six years of his practice, the book offers an insight into the artist's idiosyncratic approach to contemporary painting.Informed by the Swiss tradition of geometric abstraction and monochrome - from Olivier Mosset, John M Armleder, Christian Floquet to Francis Baudevin, Philippe Decrauzat, and Stephane Dafflon (as well as by a decisive interest in the relationships between painting and architecture, i.e. how we perceive and experience two-dimensional works in three-dimensional environments) -- Croci-Torti is building a cogent body of works dealing with and renewing the eternal parameters of painting--colours, forms, proportions, perspectives, and structures.Edited by Manoir de la Ville de Martigny curator Anne Jean-Richard Largey, this publication brings together essays by curator Samuel Gross, MAMCO Geneva Chief Curator Julien Fronsacq, American artist Blair Thurman, as well as a conversation with the artist.Born in 1984 in Monthey, Sylvain Croci-Torti lives and works between Lausanne and Martigny. He graduated from ECAL in 2013.Published with the Manoir de la Ville de Martigny.

Book Description
In 1968, ten families scraped up $1,000 each for the down payment on an old guest ranch in Oracle, Arizona. What began as a bunch of hippies with a 1960s vision of living in a place to "do their own thing" would eventually evolve into a magical aperture, a place through which a great many artists and poets would pass. The families and individuals that live in Rancho Linda Vista today are the descendants of the original idealists that followed RLV founder Charles Littler into the desert, north of Tucson, Arizona.Paul Gold has written an eclectically researched homage to the dreams of a community, people who shaped their own lives, broken away from their parents' lifestyles and conventions. The oneness of the Rancho Linda Vista community is reflected in its past and future, described by its people. Bend in the Wash sheds light on generations of nonconformists who created a sustained way of living, weaving art into life.

Book Description
Jean Baudrillard is generally recognized as one of the most important and provocative contemporary social theorists. But in the English speaking world, his reputation is largely based on books published after the 1960s, as he moved towards becoming the premier commentator on postmodernism. This wide ranging and expertly edited book examines the work of the young Baudrillard, it deepens our understanding of his seminal work on consumer culture by presenting his early essays on McLuhan, Lefebvre and Marcuse. The influence of German traditions of thought are clearly revealed, and Baudrillard's neglected and out of print writing on aesthetics is rediscovered and reprinted. Extracts from his political diaries and commentaries o

Book Description
For one year, respected critic and curator Bob Nickas put his money where his eyes are: he decided to become a collector, someone who takes art off gallery walls instead of hanging it there. His ground rules dictated that he would buy one work per month from an artist he had never written about or exhibited before. In this fascinating diary of his year on the market, he tracks the changes in his relation to art, when the commitment becomes one of the wallet and not just the mind and words. "It has affected the way I look at art," he writes. "On the one hand, if I am unwilling to part with my hard-earned money, how worthy can the art really be? On the other, there are certainly works far above my humble means... For this project, I have had to pay to have my say."
