Book Description
Excerpt from Old-Time Schools and School-Books The contrast between the dainty picture books that are provided to entice the school children of the present along the paths of knowledge, and the sparsely illustrated volumes conned by the little folk of two or three generations ago, is very great; and yet the Old books seemed beautiful to the children then, and the charm all comes back when a person of middle age or beyond happens on one of these humble friends of his youth. What an aroma of the far-gone days of childhood hovers in the yellow pages! The: scenes in the schoolroom rise in the memory, one is young again, and has in gentle illusion the same feelings and the same juvenile companions as of Old. Book Description
Excerpt from Classics Old and New: A Series of School Readers Good expression in reading is the product of sympathy and understanding, and therefore, the child who likes to read is quite sure to take first rank as a good reader. The controlling purpose of Classics, Old and New is to inspire in children a love for reading, and thus, without their being conscious of the fact, induce in them the reading habit. This is about the best and safest of all habits. If we contrive to teach young people the mechanical art of reading, and fail, at the same time, to breed in them the impulse and desire to continue their education throughout life by reading, we have cheated them out of the best thing to be obtained by going to school. Good literature is an expression for the best of the world's activity, and the power latent in such literature to lift and en lighten the mind and spirit is greater than any other power, save, perhaps, the influences of home. The formal education of many of the children that will use this series of readers will cease with the elementary schools. This fact makes the prepara tion of the readers a very serious task, especially to one who knows children well enough to realize how difficult it is to know them at all. Book Description
Excerpt from Classroom Libraries for Public Schools The first purpose of this graded list is to furnish to teachers a convenient cata logue Of the books which the Public Library has to this date devoted to school use. We hope, by having such a list, to secure the aid of the teachers in the choice of each classroom library, so that the books may be suited to the age and capacity of the Children, and helpful both to teachers and pupils in connection with the course of study. The list is only tentative, and other books will be added from time to time, both from old books found to be needed and from new books published, as the wants of the schools require and the resources of the library will permit. The library will be very glad of suggestions from teachers, both as to changes in the list and the addi tion of new books. The selection of the books and the division into grades was first made on the basis of the reading from the Children's Department of the Public Library. The first selec tion and division was very carefully revised after trying the books in the classrooms of ten schools for a full year. The assignment of the books to the different grades has been changed and modified, particularly in the subjects of travel and history, to meet the requirements of the course of study. For instance, Cofiin's books on United States history have been continued into the ninth grade, although they are not above the comprehension of much younger readers, because American history is studied in this grade, and these books are found very useful and are much sought after. Librarians, superintendents of education and teachers in other cities, to whom the list may come, will find it Open to criticism, both as to books omitted, books included which perhaps should have been left out, and as to the assignment to grades. After a longer trial of the books by further use, and a larger experience by the com pilers, we will try to issue a better and fuller list with subject entries. The suggested list of reference books is also only tentative. It is added because it is a part of our plan to build up a good reference library in each school. The entire amount of the state appropriation awarded to those schools under the library care will be expended for this purpose each year, the Public Library furnishing all the books for the pupils' home reading. Book Description
Excerpt from The Schools and the Nation Mr. Best to apply the principles here outlined to English conditions, the wide circulation it certainly deserves. But it is not the mere honour of recognition which constitutes the chief ground of my pleasure. I have grown too old in the struggle for educational ideals to let such personal satisfaction turn my head. Much more important for me is the thought that in so far as other great nations occupy themselves with the spiritual and intellectual elevation of their people, Germany too will reap the benefit of their efforts. The rivalry of two countries in the matter of education is far more welcome, far more profitable, and far more glorious than any competition in armaments. When two neighbours are each truly educated both may dare to live in peace and to devote all their strength to the improvement of their own homes and their own families. The more progress a nation makes internally, the more peaceably will i settle all external differences; and a man' can do bisli country no greater service than by exerting his powers to help other nations in their struggle for moral and intellectual progress, that they may not only uphold the cause of liberty, but may be themselves animated by a spirit of justice and goodwill. Book Description
Excerpt from The School and Other Educators Finally, every one has at some period or other been a child, a scholar, a subject of education, every son and daughter of the nation has been educated more Or less he has certain associations attached to the term education, and probably views re garding its suitability and its success in his o'wn case. Time would fail to enumerate all the agents, agencies, and interests involved in education - state, church, press, the professions in all their branches, parents, citizens, of all ranks and grades. It is in evitable, that to such a multiplicity of observers education should present different sides, and prob able, that to few if any will its full compass reveal itself.
